This internship is a paid temporary part-time up to full-time position (minimum 24 hours/week).
This position does not provide benefits however, CDOT offers all Interns (temporary employees) paid sick leave. Temporary employees accrue one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours worked, capped at forty-eight 48 hours.
Temporary positions will exist for 9 months or less.

About the Work Unit
This position is located in the Asset Management unit of the Division of Maintenance and Operations at CDOT. The Asset Management unit's purpose is to support and maintain all Maintenance related systems and mobile applications, reports and business processes.
About the position
Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking for a GIS intern to help with digitizing and updating its statewide GIS asset inventory. The candidate will be using GIS software, remote-sensing techniques, high-resolution imagery, and street-view imagery to identify and classify different assets along CDOT highways. Training and support will be provided.
Work Environment:
  • Part time, approximately 20 hours per week from home

Qualified candidates must be either:
  • Any college student enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree in the following: Geology, Geographic Information System Technology, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical, Geological Engineering or a closely related field
OR
  • A recent college graduate. Recently graduated means the individual should have attended an accredited college or university and have graduated with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree in Geology, Geographic Information System Technology, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Geotechnical or Geological Engineering or a closely related field within three calendar years.
OR
  • A certified participant in the Colorado Refugee Services .
A copy of your transcripts listing your name, the school name, courses by term, and term GPA or degree conferral and conferral date must be included in your documentation; unofficial copies are acceptable. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or credential evaluation report will result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position.

The Exceptional Candidate will be a sophomore or above in an undergraduate college/university, a graduate college/university student, or recent graduate as defined above and the following:
  • Strong interest in the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Basic knowledge of GIS software operations such as: editing features, writing simple SQL/python queries, connecting to servers, labeling features, using domains and sub-type, geodatabases and feature class, and geo-referencing images;
  • Available between 10 to 20 hours per week;
  • Have a good sense of direction while looking at a map or aerial imagery;
  • Ability to read and understand "As-Built" or "As-Constructed" engineering drawings;
  • Have a desire to learn more about GIS as it pertains to transportation infrastructure and how state government works;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Willingness to learn;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Gmail and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
