PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The General Counsel's Office manages the Boston Public Health Commission's legal department andensures its compliance with state and federal laws and regulations. This work includes, but is not limited to,ensuring compliance with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, and other applicable privacy laws and regulations, as wellas the Commission's HIPAA Privacy Policy.
Please describe the internship project:
The intern will assist the Privacy Officer and other attorneys in the General Counsel's Office with day-to-day compliance activities, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other privacy laws and regulations, andthe Commission's Privacy Policy and other internal policies. This will include assisting the Privacy Officer onthe Commission's biennial HIPAA risk assessment and liaising with bureaus and programs across theCommission to help complete the assessment and comply with HIPAA requirements. Intern duties may alsoinclude research, analysis and writing for briefs on relevant privacy and/or compliance-related topics, andassisting on Commission privacy trainings.
Please describe the internship learning outcomes:
  • By the end of the internship, the intern should be familiar with common aspects of HIPAA compliance,including the provisions of the HIPAA Privacy and Security rules that apply to BPHC. The intern will haveassisted in a HIPAA risk assessment and made recommendations to the Privacy Officer on how bureaus andprograms across the commission are complying with HIPAA and BPHC policies.
  • The intern will also gain familiarity with how a corporate compliance progarm works for a public health entity / HIPAA covered entity like BPHC and assisted in the commission's privacy training program.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Currently enrolled in an ABA accredited law school pursuing a J.D. in a Boston area law school; Must receive academic credit for the internship; Effective communications and interpersonal skills; Ability to work in collaboration with other, as well as independently; Desire to take initiative, think creatively and out of the box to problem solve; Passion for racial justice and public service; Ability to approach view situations with an equity lens.
This is a paid internship, but the intern must also receive some academic credit for it. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with telework option available.
