Job description

Under the leadership of the Horticulture and Agronomics Supervisor, responsible for the general health and vibrancy of plants on campus. Performs routine maintenance of grounds utilizing approved products and methods to control and eliminate pests and weeds and to fertilize landscape materials.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Employment duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • Implements Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program for campus landscaped areas as directed
  • Assists with development of agronomic schedule for campus landscapes to promote plant health and water efficiency
  • Applies herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and the like to lawns, shrubs, and trees, which requires proper licensing and knowledge of laws and best practices
  • Coordinates with irrigation technicians regarding water usage including scheduling of irrigation run times according to best practices per each type of plant, with a goal to reduce water consumption over time
  • Maintains records and logs of service schedules and products used on campus
  • Operates and maintains equipment and tools used in the pest control and grounds maintenance industry

Required Skills
  • Effective oral and writing skills
  • Knowledge of best practices for landscape pest prevention and elimination for lawns, shrubs, and trees as prescribed by University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (IFAS)
  • Knowledge of irrigation control systems, Hunter being preferred
  • Knowledge of occupational safety rules and practices
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work in adverse environmental conditions typical of Central Florida
  • Knowledge of mathematics sufficient to calculate quantities and determine appropriate ratios and mixtures of agronomic products
  • Ability to work independently and maintain accurate data logs, records and information sheets as required
  • Ability to effectively interact and communicate with others

Required Experience
  • Completion of applicable courses/training in landscape Pest Management practices
  • Three (3) years of related experience in landscape maintenance agronomics as an applicator
  • Florida Commercial Pest Control Operator Certification and Florida Limited Lawn and Ornamental Certification are required within first 90 days of hire

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • ISA Certified Arborist is a plus

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.
