Job Summary:

The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) - Atlanta Area School for the Deaf located in Clarkston, GA, is recruiting for a Instructional Leader (Student Support). Under the general supervision the Instructional Leader is a school administrator and serves as a collaborative member of the core leadership team led by the school-level superintendent in providing a cohesive educational program for students who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Each Instructional Leader oversees and provides strong leadership in one of five academic domains: English and Social Studies; Math and Science; Special Education and Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE); Student Services; and Student Support. This position reports to the School-Level Superintendent. Duties includes but is not limited to the following:

Description of Duties:

  • Serve on the core leadership team for the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf (AASD)
  • Assist in building and sustaining the school mission and vision while facilitating shared leadership, and addressing internal and external dynamics at work within the school
  • Oversee school climate through communicating clear objectives and assist in fostering and sustaining a positive school climate
  • Provide Instructional Leadership and assist in leading a learning community by participating in professional development for continuous improvement and to retain quality staff
  • Utilize data to make instructional decisions, organizational management planning and activities, and guide school success
  • Support a learning environment based on high expectations and respect for all individuals
  • Practice shared decision making
  • Assist in the selection process of quality teachers and other school employees as assigned
  • Supervise Student Support staff, including library/media specialist, instructional technology resource teacher, school nurse, paraprofessionals, etc
  • Manage substitute coverage for teaching staff
  • Manage scheduling classroom support using paraprofessionals
  • Serve on the placement/evaluation team for students, including toddlers, referred to AASD
  • Provide professional growth opportunities for staff and establish mentoring programs based on effective practices
  • Demonstrate effective communication with teachers, students, parents, families and the larger community
  • Assist in coordinating school safety components, daily organizations, and maintenance of the facility
  • Assist in seeking and allocating fiscal resources
  • Organize and manage technology resources
  • Manage conflict and crisis in a timely and professional manner
  • Set, support, and sustain a focus on school goals and school-wide student achievement
  • Exhibit professionalism and demonstrate professional standards

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. Occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching may be required. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs. Additional work hours during the week and weekend, including travel that may be assigned to meet the needs of the school and students.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualification possess one or more of the following:

  • Certification in Deaf Education
  • Experience in implementing Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans
  • Four years of program management experience in an educational setting
  • Experience working in a school serving Deaf and hard-of-hearing students
  • Has a strong understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and how Individualized Educational Program (IEP) plans are created and implemented
  • Experience implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)
  • Experience managing school operations (e.g., personnel, facilities, food services, and technology services)
  • Experience using assessment data to support student learning outcomes
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language without the use of an interpreter to communicate with staff and/or stakeholders in a one-on-one or group setting

**Note: Applicants will be expected to exhibit the ability to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL) during the interview with an expectation of obtaining an ASL rating of 3+ or above within three years from date of hire.

Master's degree in education, administration, public administration or a related administrative field in the area of assignment from an accredited college or university AND L-5 certification AND Two years of program management experience in an educational setting.
