As NC State’s central office and authoritative source for institutional reporting and analytics, Institutional Strategy and Analysis (ISA) supports the university’s strategic decisions, planning activities, operations, evaluation efforts, and accountability by providing consistent, reliable information and analysis to university leaders, administrators, faculty and staff, students, external stakeholders, and the public.
In carrying out its mission, ISA:

  • Collects, analyzes, interprets, models, and reports information about NC State
  • Manages institutional strategic planning, including implementation planning and metrics for the university strategic plan
  • Provides leadership in governance and strategy with respect to the university’s academic and administrative data
  • Administers, analyzes, supports, and oversees institutional surveys
  • Supports, administers, and maintains applicable data structures, applications, and systems
Essential Job Duties:

The Institutional Research Analyst works as a member of the Research and Analysisteam within Institutional Strategy and Analysis. In collaboration with other ISA teams (e.g., Institutional Analytics, Data Science, Business Intelligence, and Data Governance), the Institutional Research Analyst supports the mission of ISA by producing research and analysis related to various facets of university administration – including (but not limited to) enrollment trends, student credit hours, financial activity, research activity, student success metrics, financial aid, facilities use, and benchmarking and comparative analysis. Working in conjunction with other members of the Research and Analysis team, the Institutional Research Analyst will seek out and propose opportunities to continually strengthen our research and analysis products and services.
Specific duties of the position include:

  • Provide analysis and consultation on a variety of administrative-related matters, applying subject matter knowledge to support institutional decisions and institutional effectiveness through research and fact-finding combined with critical thinking and an understanding of applicable business processes, systems, and data sources.
  • Prepare briefings, reports, and presentations of analyses and research findings. Scope of responsibility includes all phases of a project from design to data gathering, tabulation and analysis of relevant information, report drafting, and presentation. Written reports and presentations typically include context, evidence, conclusions, and recommendations for action.
  • Work on topics that are increasingly complex and on matters that have significant impact on institutional operations.
  • Assist supervisor, other Research and Analysis team members, and Institutional Analytics, Business Intelligence, Data Science, Data Governance, and other ISA teams with analytical needs and contribute to cross-functional and/or cross-organizational project teams as directed.
  • Design, collect, analyze, and research institutional data according to established procedures and regulations, observing professional, ethical, legal, and policy standards for data security, privacy, and confidentiality.
  • Perform related duties as assigned or required to meet ISA or university goals and objectives.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Requires a post-baccalaureate degree or equivalent independent experience.

  • At least two years’ experience in a role that includes research or analytical functions – such as higher education, government, or research/policy organization (graduate work may be substituted for professional experience, provided applicants have relevant graduate work experience).

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Experience producing written analytical papers, reports, or briefings
  • Proficiency with analytical or statistical applications to clean, transform, and analyze data
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic statistical concepts and techniques
  • Knowledge of higher education issues, especially issues faced by public and/or research institutions
  • Ability to apply critical thinking skills to assess strengths and weaknesses of information sources, data, and other research and analysis resources and products
  • Excellent communication skills, including writing, presentation, and interpersonal communications
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines and manage competing priorities
  • Self-motivated, with high standards for rigorous and detailed work
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate with others in a team environment
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and new subject areas
  • Desire to learn about Institutional Research and higher education organizations
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in an Institutional Research office, especially in a public university
  • Master’s degree or higher in a related field (e.g., education, social sciences, economics, public or business administration, computer/data science, statistics).
  • Experience working in an Institutional Research, assessment, or reporting role.
  • Experience working with institutional data.
  • Experience with a statistical/analytical application (e.g., SAS, Tableau, R, SPSS).
