JWP is a small industrial painting business serving the oil and gas industry nationwide. We specialize in fuel terminal facility tank coatings, liners, pipe coatings, and compliance painting. We operate in crews of an average of 5-8 people and go where the work takes us from South Florida to West Texas and beyond.

We are a small company of 10-15 employees but growing and in need of experienced personnel and management candidates to grow with us.

JOB SUMMARY:

Traveling crewman:

Operate abrasive blasting, spray painting, and hand-tool equipment to apply protective coatings and paints to fabricated structural steel.

The crew will work and travel together for the duration of projects.

  • Minimum starting rate of $20/hour with minimal experience and qualifications. Relevant qualifications and/or experience increases starting pay rate.
  • Typical work schedules are 10 hour work days, 5-7 days a week while on projects.
  • Typical duration away from home is 2-6 weeks at a time. Typically home for 1 week between projects.
  • Crew is supplied a company vehicle, trailer, and necessary equipment to perform the scope of work.
  • Hotel is provided for while traveling. 2 crewmen per double occupancy room. AirBnB is provided as available. Additional $25/day per-diem is provided for travel expenses. Lunch is provided when working.
  • Increased pay upon demonstration of on the job capability, resourcefulness, and competency. Must pass a 3 month short service employee term before eligible for pay increases or promotion.
  • Must be elgible to obtain a TWIC card including background checks.
  • Must pass initial and regular and random drug and alcohol DOT screenings.

We are seeking individuals who desire to expand their knowledge, skills, and responsibilities for increased compensation. After an initial period, JWP will invest additional training and certifications to the employee as desired. We are seeking to promote crew foreman/site supervisors/managers from within. Year end bonuses are paid based on individual performance review and company profitability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Set-up and operate abrasive blasting compressors and pots in assistance to a sandblaster, or as a sandblaster.
  • Prepare, set up, and test all paint spraying equipment prior to use to make sure all equipment is in working order.
  • Apply surface materials when required to fill any surface imperfections. Inspect surface condition of substrate prior to coating and report any irregularities to immediate supervisor.
  • Select and use various types of hand tools, abrasive sandpapers, and grinders.
  • Understand and be able to recognize surfaces for painting readiness including the presence of grit.
  • Prepare and mix coating materials in accordance with coating manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Apply protective coatings to various types of surfaces (generally metal) using airless, air-assisted, conventional, electrostatic, pressurized air spray, high volume-low pressure, plural component paint spray equipment, thermal spray, brush, or roller.
  • Measure coating film thicknesses dry and wet as required by job specifications.
  • Clean all paint spraying equipment upon completion of use and report any defective parts or equipment maintenance required to immediate supervisor.
  • Keep work area clean and free of debris.

COMPETENCIES:

  • Above all, safety is our highest priority. Knowledge of typical safety procedures (work permits, PPE use, training) is desired. Previous experience in industrial environments is not required, but preferred.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrable skills in basic cleaning and blasting procedures.
  • Comprehension of basic product specifications, protective, environmental, and safety procedures.
  • Comprehension of instructions relating to specific project such as marking details or masking instructions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work for long hours at a time.
  • Availability to travel away from home for weeks or months at a time.
  • Basic communication skills.
  • Ability to perform work at heights.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Must pass regular and random DOT mandated drug & alcohol screening.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Painting equipment such as brushes, rollers, spray tips, and paint pumps.
  • Various paint sprayers that may include airless, conventional, air-assisted, plural component, electrostatic, or thermal spray.
  • Blasting equipment such as pressure cleaners, blast pots.
  • Access equipment such as scaffolding, ladders, and spider baskets, man-lifts.
  • Hand tools such as grinders, scrapers, and sanders.
  • Personal protective equipment such as safety harnesses, hoods, gloves, safety glasses, and respirators.
  • Cleaning equipment such as brooms and shovels.
  • General construction equipment such as compressors, generators, and DH units.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Requires the ability to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands; with large equipment as an extension of the worker
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with other team members.
  • The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 120 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time.
  • There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution.
  • The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts & bruises.
