Summary
This is an entry-level electrician position performing basic electrical maintenance work. This position will learn how to perform electrical and mechanical repairs to various types of electrical equipment at Water Resources' water treatment plants, water reclamation facilities, wastewater pump stations and all other facilities while working under the supervision of other experienced electricians. This position will receive both on the job and classroom training while assisting the on-staff electricians.
Job Duties
Assists electricians in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems for the Department of Water Resources treatment facilities, buildings, and related equipment by utilizing electrical testing devices and checking switches and wiring for grounds and shorts or loose connections.
Assist electricians with work orders to conduct various installation, repair or preventative maintenance to electrical equipment and or system controls.
Assists in maintaining, repairing, and installing motor controls, electrical panels, variable frequency drives, air compressors, etc. at all facilities in Water Resources.
Assists in monitoring and calibrating flow meters and other instrumentation to assure all are functioning properly.
Emphasis will be placed on learning how to maintain accurate records of electrical equipment maintenance activities and updating the CMMS with necessary information.
Learns how to ensure that operation, repair, maintenance, and installation of electrical systems and devices are following applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Assists electricians in monitoring inventory levels of spare parts, department equipment, tools, supplies, and other materials; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials; picks up supplies as needed.
Learns how to operate a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with projects and work activities. Electrical equipment and tools to include but not limited to utility truck, boom/bucket truck, high lifts, forklifts, conduit benders, pipe threaders, various electrical meters including VOM, oscilloscope, tachometer, megger, thermal imager, various test and termination kits and other specialized equipment associated with electrical systems maintenance and repair.
Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning project work areas, and cleaning shop; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
Emphasis is placed on employees learning and following DWR's safety programs/policies. Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure personal safety and other employees.
Performs other related duties as required.
Employee is subject to recall to duty in cases of emergency.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
No experience required.
This is an on-the-job training program with the requirement to complete relevant technical classes related to electrical work. Classes and/or program will be determined by Upper Management.
Technical school diploma or certificate - Industrial Electrician or electronics or other related field preferred.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Level III, II or I Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technologist Certificate preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of electronic concepts and ability to apply knowledge in repairing and maintaining electrical and mechanical equipment.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to learn quickly through instruction or observation.
Ability to learn how to read and interpret P&IDs, engineering documents and schematics.
Ability to work under adverse conditions in constantly changing situations.
Physical Requirements
While performing the essential functions of this job, employee will be required to lift, move or carry heavy objects; may possibly be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic substances, excessive noise, temperature extremes, and dampness/humidity.

Supplemental Information:
The incumbent may qualify for an automatic promotion to Industrial Electrician I if the following conditions are met:
  • After two years as an Industrial Electrician Trainee and
  • Ability to perform Industrial Electrician I level job specifications
  • Recommendation from Upper Management.

This position is classified as safety-sensitive. Incumbent will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.
This class specification should not be interpreted as all inclusive. It is intended to identify the major responsibilities and requirements of this job. The incumbents may be required to perform job-related responsibilities and tasks other than those stated in this specification.
  • Position qualifies for a 5% certification incentive based upon attainment of a Level III Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technologist Certificate.
  • Position qualifies for a 5% certification incentive based upon attainment of a Level II Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technologist Certificate.
  • Position qualifies for a 5% certification incentive based upon attainment of a Level I Water/Wastewater Maintenance Technologist Certificate.

Maximum of 15% in certification incentive pay.
