Job description

Title: Icelandic Lava Pure Salmon (ILPS) Research Fellow
Location: Juneau, Alaska (with travel to Sangerdi, Iceland)
About Iceland Lava Pure Salmon (ILPS)
Sealaska's sustainable seafood division is fronted by UK based New England Seafood International (NESI). In 2022 NESI invested in 2 businesses in Iceland (Icemar and AG Seafoods) in order to strengthen its access to Atlantic White Fish species, predominantly Cod and Haddock, and to provide an enlarged sales footprint to North America. Our Group champions and promotes the Wild Pacific Salmon from Alaska and will continue to drive the compelling taste, quality and provenance messages that make this salmon unique. However, the overwhelming majority salmon sold worldwide is now from farmed sources. Responsible aquaculture is going to be a vital ingredient in feeding a growing population in a water and carbon friendly way.
Farming Salmon on land, thus segregating the farmed Atlantic salmon from wild stocks and containing any environmental cross contamination, is undoubtedly a big part of the future. Most land-based systems rely on full recirculating systems (RAS systems) to filter, clean and re-oxygenate the same water. The relatively new technology can work but is fraught with risk. Iceland is fortunate to have highly porous lava rock (recently formed in geological terms) that filters the sea water as it pounds the rocks from the coastline, as well as the fresh water flowing down towards the sea from the glacial hills and mountains. This system creates the purest water, and in this purest water grow some of the best tasting Atlantic salmon you will find.
Sealaska, through NESI, has partnered up with First Water Salmon in Iceland to create a processing and sales and marketing venture to take this incredible opportunity to market. We have named this venture ILPS, or the Icelandic Lava Pure Salmon company. ILPS is looking for Sealaska Fellows to take part in learning and development opportunities with the team.
