Job description

Job Summary:

The Chronicle of Philanthropy is seeking a strategic and entrepreneurial Human Resources Manager to help us recruit, develop and retain a diverse and high-performing team. The ideal candidate will be excited about building a strong culture and efficient processes at a high-growth remote-first nonprofit organization with staff across thirteen states. They should bring strong knowledge of best practices in Human Resources, excellent communication skills and attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize among multiple ongoing projects. This role is ideal for someone interested in a part-time, flexible, remote role. We envision this position as 22.5 hrs/week (60% of our 37.5hr work week), although we could increase or decrease hours for the right candidate. This role reports to the Chief Operating Officer.

About Us:

The Chronicle of Philanthropy empowers philanthropy, nonprofit professionals, and everyone seeking to make meaningful change by providing insightful and valuable information and resources. We have two fundamental objectives:

  • We aim to strengthen the philanthropic and nonprofit world by connecting it with accurate and relevant information; by providing tools and resources to help professionals grow and succeed; by surfacing innovative and creative ideas to help the field do better; and by holding philanthropy accountable for its actions.
  • We aim to broaden and deepen public understanding of philanthropy and nonprofits by explaining the essential role this $6T sector plays in our everyday lives, by telling stories about philanthropy’s success and failures in tackling society’s challenges, and by inspiring individuals to join in strengthening their communities and world.

In 2023, the Chronicle of Philanthropy embarked on an exciting and monumental new chapter as it became an independent nonprofit. Over the past year, we have raised millions in philanthropic funding and nearly doubled our staff. We are now ready to bring on our first staff member focused on Human Resources to help us support our staff and continue to grow.

Key Responsibilities:

Recruitment & Talent Acquisition

  • Oversee and manage a high-quality hiring process that helps CoP recruit a diverse team, including working with supervisors to develop job descriptions, post job openings, screen resumes, coordinate interviews, and conduct background and reference checks
  • Work with management to identify and plan for future staffing needs

Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Coordinate and facilitate the onboarding process for new employees, ensuring a successful integration into the organization
  • Manage a smooth offboarding process for departing employees and conduct exit interviews

Culture

  • Develop initiatives to foster a fun and high-performing culture, increase employee engagement, and promote diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Plan all-staff meetings and other opportunities to build connections among staff of different roles and backgrounds.

HR Administration, Compensation and Benefits

  • Develop and maintain high quality Human Resources policies and procedures
  • Maintain employee records and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and best practices
  • Assist with administering employee benefit programs and provide information and support to employees regarding benefits (most Chronicle benefits are administered by our PEO, Engage)
  • Assist with periodic salary reviews, ensuring internal equity and competitiveness with peer orgs

Staff Development and Performance Reviews

  • Develop and oversee a strong and equitable staff development process, including goal setting and performance evaluations
  • Provide guidance and support to managers and employees on performance-related matters

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years of Human Resources experience, preferably including nonprofit HR experience
  • Strong knowledge of Human Resources principles, best practices, and legal regulations
  • Demonstrated success in promoting a diverse and inclusive culture with positive morale
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Excellent collaboration and relationship-building skills, including cross-cultural competence
  • The ability to handle complex situations and confidential matters with sensitivity and discretion
  • Flexibility to take on different roles as needed in a high-growth startup environment
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple ongoing projects and work independently
  • Technical competency in MS office suite and HR information systems

Salary and Benefits:

The expected salary range for this position is $45-$65K annually for a 60% role (22.5hrs/week, which is 60% of our 37.5 hour workweek). For the right candidate, we could increase or decrease weekly hours.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy offers a generous benefits package including:
