Description

Bell Nursery, a business unit of Central Garden & Pet, is searching for a talented Human Resources Manager with terrific leadership and multi-tasking skills to support the merchandising side of our Live Goods business. Bell Nursery grows and sells potted plants to The Home Depot and the merchandising team then services The Home Depot stores to make sure the plants are displayed in an attractive and accessible manner.

This is newly formed hands-on role, requiring daily interaction with leadership as well as employees across the Mid-Atlantic region. You will partner with the VP of Merchandising to lead all functional areas of HR and will have the opportunity to manage and implement HR policies, processes, and programs to managers and employees to ensure we have an informed and productive workforce. This role will report to the HR Director for Live Goods and will be remote with the expectation that this position travels to different store locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic on a regular basis. The Mid-Atlantic region includes locations in MD, Northern VA, DE, Eastern PA, NY and NJ.

This role will work in support of our Central to Home strategy and drive progressive HR initiatives that strengthen our Culture pillar, including developing and recruiting top diverse talent, building capability, and continuing to solidify Central Garden & Pet's position as a great place to work. MEASURES OF SUCCESS

  • Ownership for all Human Resource activities on the store side of the business including staffing, employee relations, performance management, workers' compensation administration, compensation management, workforce planning, succession planning, positive work environment, and training and development.
  • Partner with leadership in helping people leaders increase their skills in coaching and developing their employees; serve as the main resource to guide people leaders in the fair and equitable treatment of employees.
  • Provide leadership in resolving employee relations incidents; conduct fair and thorough complaint investigations; promote open communications and a positive work environment; ensure that policies and processes are fairly and uniformly applied.
  • Create and/or deliver training modules to enhance the skill level of the workforce and ensure compliance.
  • Build an employee engagement program, including company events, employee involvement and other methods to reward employees.
  • Ensure legal compliance with various governmental laws and regulations covering Affirmative Action/EEO, OSHA, DOT, wage & hour, staffing, workers' compensation, and harassment prevention.
  • Manage workers' compensation claims and issues; mitigate safety risks affecting employees; maintain OSHA log and claims files.
  • Represent the company in unemployment matters, including responding to correspondence and attending hearings as needed.
  • Partner with recruiting resources to ensure positions are staffed and the talent pipeline is primed.
  • Lead and develop an HR Generalist direct report.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned.


Qualifications

IDEAL CANDIDDATE ATTRIBUTES:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources or related business field along with at least 7 years of progressive, professional-level HR generalist experience; a minimum of 2 years in a retail environment is strongly preferred.
  • At least 2 years of people leadership experience that demonstrates success developing a direct report.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
  • Continuous learner focused on staying current in knowledge of human resources and state and Federal employment laws. A PHR, SPHR or SHRM-CP certification is highly desired.
  • Superior employee relations skills; demonstrated success in resolving complex personnel issues; and the ability to conduct a thorough employee relations investigation.
  • Capable of communicating verbally and in writing, with diverse audiences, in a clear and concise manner.
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint) and HRIS systems.
