Testing Center Specialist - (240000BW)

The purpose of the Testing Center Specialist position is to support the mission of Accessibility & Disability Services (ADS) in ensuring equal educational access to students with disabilities under Section 504 and ADAAA laws. Under general supervision, this position is responsible for operational tasks involved in providing accommodations to students registered with ADS, including test accommodations, assistive technology, and conversion of print materials to alternative formats. Work requires specialized knowledge of disabilities, disability accommodations and services, as well as the ability to interact effectively with students with disabilities, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities and Duties

Duties for the Testing Center Specialist include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists the Testing Center Coordinator by managing the front desk of the ADS Testing Center, including receiving phone calls, emails, and Testing Center guests
  • Utilizes “Accommodate” to maintain an electronic testing calendar and manage the various steps of a Testing Center request
  • Collaborates with the Testing Center Coordinator to ensure that tests are administered according to each student's approved accommodations in accordance with Section 504/ADA laws and faculty instructions; troubleshoots issues with test administration, such as resolving technical issues with computers or software, managing student issues pertaining to test anxiety or disability-related symptoms, and consulting with faculty regarding questions/problems with individual exams
  • Ensures confidentiality of all disability-related information  
  • Assists the Testing Center Coordinator and ADS Associate Director in the training and oversight of student workers whose duties include test proctoring, reading, and scribing for students taking tests
  • Instructs students on the use of assistive technology commonly used as an accommodation and in the Testing Center, such as CCTV, Kurzweil, JAWS, and ZoomText
  • Assists the Assistive Technology Coordinator with converting text material to accessible formats; obtains digital copies of books from publishers or works with the Print Center to have books chopped and rebound as part of the in-house conversion process
  • Assists the ADS office with processing student requests for temporary accommodations
  • Participates in ADS programs and activities, such as disability awareness programming, ADS student orientations, and Delta Alpha Pi Honor Society events; represents ADS at various university events, including Open Houses, TU4U events, and New Student Program Orientations

There are occasionally extended hours required for this position. This includes evening and weekend hours during the final exam period and for various office and campus events.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years of experience in administrative staff work

Elementary knowledge of reference and research methods and techniques used in collecting, compiling, and organizing data and information; of basic methods and techniques used in organizing and conducting studies and analyses or programs, procedures, and organizations; of basic analytical and statistical principles and techniques. Skill in the use of office automation software and its application; in operating manual and automated office equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to present ideas and information clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; to perform mathematical computations; to present statistical material in chart and graph form.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in higher education
  • General knowledge pertaining to individuals with disabilities
  • Knowledge of Section 504, ADA and FERPA laws
  • Ability to interact effectively with on-campus and off-campus parties in a courteous and efficient manner, exercising discretion, tact, and judgment
  • Ability and interest in working collaboratively as part of an office team
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to follow up independently as needed
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and execute multiple and continuing assignments with general instructions
