Job description

Alaska West Express, Inc. is looking for an energetic, organized, detail orientated HSSE Technician. If you enjoy working with people, if you can multi-task, problem solve, communicate effectively then this position is for you! The HSSE Technician is an entry level position with room to grow. 

 

This position is a critical member of the HSSE Department. The position provides support to Alaska West Express, Inc. through the professional execution of health, safety, and environmental projects and tasks, emergency response, data management, facility and equipment inspections and evaluations.  This position is also an instructor for the Lynden Training Center, which serves internal and external customers. There is an expectation that this position requires an individual to be a self-starter, and the ability to work independently and as a team.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Attendance and timeliness are essential job functions for this position.
  • Maintain compliance with the company training requirements.
  • Assist with evaluating and inspecting the Alaska West Express Fairbanks emergency response equipment. Ensure that the inventory sheets are accurate, the equipment is properly sized and functional, the equipment will work with expected chemical incidents, and that it is properly organized and stored.
  • Perform boots on the ground safety oversight by identifying and correcting workplace hazards and unsafe conditions.
  • Monitor employee exposure to job and chemical hazards as regulated by regulation, company requirements, and best practices.
  • Assist in the implementation and compliance of site-specific safety policies.
  • Assist in the creation of job hazard analysis and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments.
  • Maintains chemical inventories and storage to include updating Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Develop and maintain confined space and building emergency pre-incident and evacuation plans as required.
  • Inspect and maintain, as required, terminal safety and emergency response equipment.
  • Assist HSSE staff with conducting and tracking facility industrial hygiene activities as required. Inspecting and maintaining IH equipment may also be required.
  • Inventory, inspect, maintain, and properly store Lynden Training Center props, training equipment, personnel issue equipment, and student supplies. Includes the development inspection system that is based on manufacture recommendations and best practices.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of training curriculum, training aids, and student resources.
  • Be an active member of Alaska West Express, Inc. Emergency Response Team (ERT).
  • Participate in the AWE HSSE Observation Program.
  • Independently instruct entry level courses and assist other instructors with advanced level courses. Tasks include setting up for, conducting, and cleaning up after training.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess interpersonal skills and the ability to work cooperatively with a variety of stakeholders in planning and achieving goals.
  • Maintain a 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is required and may be completed following the start of employment.

 

Prefer candidates that have the following:

  • Fire service instructor, and
  • ETT or higher.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:

Candidates must have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED). Prefer candidates that are currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from an undergraduate program with a concentration in Safety, Emergency Management, or Emergency Services.

 

Must have strong Excel, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook skills.

 

Must have the ability to work independently and handle a variety of tasks at one time. The applicant must have strong communication and organizational skills.

 

Prefer the candidate have industrial safety and emergency response/first responder experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with co-workers, supervisors, and managers, to understand procedures and warning signs and or markings in the English language, to respond to inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.

 

Ability to read, analyze and interpret policies, handbooks, technical manuals, contracts and agreements. Ability to speak clearly and produce quality written communications.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, and percentages.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

High skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently, handle a variety of tasks at one time.
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team under pressure of deadlines. 
  • Ability to implement student-facing training programs as required.
  • Ability to gather and analyze information.
  • Ability to use reason when dealing with highly emotional topics.
  • Ability to communicate in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain an appropriate professional presence.
  • Ability to travel up to 20% of the year.
  • Able to exhibit technical skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communications skills, including public speaking.

  • Occasionally required to work more than 12 hours per day and odd shift schedule.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee works in various extreme artic weather conditions.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however hearing protection may be required.
