Summary
A Host is responsible for greeting guests as they enter and showing them to their table or waiting area. To do well in this role you should be comfortable standing for long periods and managing a very busy shift.
Job Tasks / Duties:
Host/Hostess general duties and responsibilities:
- Greeting guests as they enter and putting them on a waiting list as necessary.
- Providing guests with menus and answering any initial questions.
- Seating guests at tables or in waiting areas.
- Assigning guests to tables they prefer, while keeping table rotation in mind so that servers receive an even amount of customers.
- Holding tables to ensure reservations are able to be set upon arrival.
- Answering the phone, redirecting inquiries to the appropriate person.
- Engaging with guests to ensure they’re happy with food and service.
- Responding to complaints, helping to resolve them by notifying management.
- A knowledge of the menu enough to navigate to-go orders.
- Learning to navigate Open Table quickly and efficiently.
- Providing great customer service.
Job Requirements:
- 17 years of age or older.
- Ability to provide top-notch customer service in a fast-paced environment.
- A positive attitude and ability to work well under pressure with all restaurant staff.
- Does high quality work while unsupervised.
- Able to work in a standing position for long periods of time.
- Able to safely lift and easily maneuver trays of food when necessary.
- Willing to follow instructions and ask questions for clarification if needed.
- Able to handle money accurately and operate a point-of-sale system.
- Able to work in a busy restaurant environment.
- Restaurant experience is a plus.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Required to stand for long periods and walk, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, stretch and twist or reach. (Shifts can vary up to 10 hours or double shift)
- Push, pull or lift up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.
Education and/or Experience
- High School education or equivalent.
- Previous waitstaff and/or banquet experience.
