About Precinct 3
Commissioner Precinct 3 is led by Tom Ramsey. Under the new map, Precinct 3 now spans as far west as Cypress - as far north as Tomball and Huffman - and as far east as Crosby. Responsibilities for Commissioner Ramsey's office include approximately 47% of all unincorporated Harris County, 6,750 lane miles of roadway, 69 parks, 10 Community and Nature Centers, and 8 hike and bike trails, including the nation's longest urban-forested corridor - the Spring Creek Greenway.
Precinct 3 is also proud to be home to, and partner with, 15 school districts, 11 cities, 202 municipal utility districts, and approximately 1,000 neighborhoods.
What you will do for Precinct Three
The horticulturist works with garden staff to organize, implement, and maintain botanical research and display collections. This position involves training, supervising, and managing other members of the horticulture crew. In doing so, this position works in collaboration with and reports to the park manager.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Independent judgement is required in the organization of work, establishment of priorities, and coordination of activities.
- Confers with administrative team for prioritization of projects, equipment, and additional labor.
- Works as part of a team of horticulture personnel in developing designs for permanent and seasonal garden displays.
- Develop, oversee, and implement fertilization and pesticide schedules and application methods.
- Provides training and technical guidance to garden staff and volunteers in the proper procedures for maintaining various types of vegetation throughout the facility.
- Assist with inventory of botanical signage for living collections. Knowledge and understanding of scientific nomenclature for labeling of plant collections is required.
- General household duties such as taking out trash, picking up litter, cleaning the facility.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Ornamental Horticulture, Floriculture, or closely related field from an accredited college or university
- Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the assigned duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of cultural requirements for cultivating a wide range of plants.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, and tools used in gardening and horticultural procedures, including watering, fertilization, and pest/pathogen control.
Ability to operate power tools used in turf and related maintenance activities.
Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate others.
Ability to coordinate the work of volunteers and community service workers.
Ability to communicate effectively with others, both verbal and written, using technical and non-technical language.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written policies, procedures, and instructions.
Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and oral instructions.
Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
Ability and willingness to quickly learn and use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and technology.
Basic Microsoft Office skills.

Licensure:
- A pesticide applicator's license (in lawn & ornamental and weed control) issued through the Texas Department of Agriculture. (preferred)
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
- Full time | Monday - Friday
- Schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (June - October) | 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (November - May)
- Weekends and after hours required as needed for special events and activities.
Reporting Relationships:
- Reports to Position: Park Manager
- Supervised Positions: 2-10 Caretakers
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- The horticulturist regularly works outside and is frequently exposed to hot, cold, wet, and humid weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- While performing the duties of this job, the horticulturist is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and balance. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands/arms and use hands/fingers to handle machinery or feel for objects. The employee must regularly lift/move 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Employee also needs to be able to talk, hear, and smell in order to identify and communicate safety issues.
