Job description

Planned Parenthood of New York City is seeking a HIV Prevention Specialist to join our Project Street Beat team. This role will be based at our Project Street Beat Brooklyn Office at 534 Eastern Parkway, 2nd Floor Brooklyn, NY 1122, but will work in our Mobile Health Center a majority of the time.

The goal of this position will be to use a team approach to conducting field-based outreach, client engagement activities, HIV counseling and testing, and service linkages with individuals eligible for Project Street Beat services, including those who are living with or at risk for HIV/STIs, active substance users, homeless or unstably housed, and/or exchange sex for food, drugs, or shelter.

This is an exciting and important time at Planned Parenthood of New York City. We are building on our strength with dynamic new leadership, talented staff members, engaged donors and activists, and amazing community partners. We are determined to thrive and grow in these times of transition and resistance.

Planned Parenthood of New York City (PPNYC) stands strong as a trusted provider of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care, an accurate source of sexual health information, and a steadfast partner in the ongoing fight to achieve sexual and reproductive justice, especially health and racial equity. Working at PPNYC is more than a job. It is an opportunity to help ensure that all New Yorkers have access to affordable, high-quality sexual and reproductive health care and evidence-based education programming so they can lead healthy lives and fulfill their dreams. We approach our work through a reproductive justice lens, seeking to break down the barriers that prevent individuals from accessing the health care and information they need and deserve.

What an HIV Prevention Specialist does:

  • Works within a team to conduct consumer engagement and health promotion in a variety of settings to engage potential PSB consumers, including targeted street outreach, community partner outreach, and social networking within NYC’s underserved communities.

  • Performs outreach activities in communities where potential PSB consumers congregate including methadone clinics, shooting galleries, strolls, community parks, street corners, and local business and service providers. Establishes trusting relationships and provides information on and referrals to PSB services.

  • Provides HIV counseling and testing as part of the PSB Mobile Health Center team.

  • Facilitates linkages to internal and external services including HIV prevention/PrEP/PEP counselling, HIV primary care, HIV case management, Health Home care management, and harm reduction services such as ESAP and overdose prevention services; as well as PPNYC health centers and external social service agencies.

  • Completes and submits service documentation on a weekly basis, and maintains files compliant with PSB standards as outlined in the PSB Policy and Procedure Manual.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Minimum of 1 of year of data entry experience and proficiency with Microsoft Office software

  • Minimum of 1 of year of volunteer or work experience conducting outreach to populations at risk for HIV/STIs, active substance users, homeless or unstably housed

  • Ability to positively engage with marginalized communities

  • An interest in expanding your analysis and knowledge about the role that racial inequity plays in our society, and a commitment to building and/or deepening your commitment to racial equity in your work

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing HIV counseling and testing for STD/STIs

  • A valid Driver’s License

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

  • Knowledge of sexual reproductive healthcare and the services PPNYC offers

  • Understands the dynamics of working in a team environment

PPGNY's benefits package includes:

Generous PTO and holiday schedule

Medical, dental and vision coverage options for you and eligible dependents

FSA, HSA, Commuter pre-tax reimbursement funds

Short and Long Term Disability, Free Basic Life and AD&D

401(k) Retirement Plan with Safe Harbor contributions after 1 year of employment

All positions at PPGNY require:
