Job description

As a KAVI School Violence Prevention Specialist, you will be a cohort member of the KAVI site team of Violence Intervention professionals, working alongside a Social Worker and the School Programs Manager within a school setting. With training, support, and utilizing KAVI curricula, you will design and facilitate conflict resolution workshops, provide mediation and mentorship support to students, and manage a caseload of KAVI VIP participants. Workshops and sessions are held in person at your assigned KAVI Site.

Kings Against Violence Initiative, Inc. (KAVI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) youth-serving organization with a mission to prevent and eliminate interpersonal violence from the lives of young people through advocacy, peer leadership, community mobilization, and social justice.

KAVI promotes community wellness and healing by operating high-impact youth Violence Prevention and intervention programs in Central Brooklyn. Our programs take place in hospital-based, school, and community settings. We also work with a broad range of partners to do community strengthening and healing programs.

KAVI is seeking qualified School Violence Prevention Specialists (SVPS). The SVPS will act as a liaison between students, school administration, and KAVI staff to create supportive relationships, promoting continuity of care and minimizing instances of conflict in the school setting. SVPS utilizes interruption and de-escalation techniques within the school setting, provides support and intervention during KAVI school programs, and facilitates conflict resolution discussion groups and one on one conversations with teenagers. The School Violence Prevention Specialist’s role integrates the functions of case assessment and advocacy in the school setting for program participants.

As a KAVI School Violence Prevention Specialist, you will be a cohort member of the KAVI site team of Violence Intervention professionals, working alongside a Social Worker and the School Programs Manager within a school setting. With training, support, and utilizing KAVI curricula, you will design and facilitate conflict resolution workshops, provide mediation and mentorship support to students, and manage a caseload of KAVI VIP participants. Workshops and sessions are held in person at your assigned KAVI Site.

Job responsibilities include:
  • Attend team and staff meetings with your site Social Worker, School Programs Manager, and School Point Person.
  • Design, plan, track participant's progress, facilitate and run workshops for young people.
  • Regularly update your caseload management spreadsheet. Communicate availability and actively engage with your site social worker and supervisor.
  • Provide input to and support the development of program materials, ensuring they are effective for the relevant youth audience.
  • Support young people in navigating life, making wise choices, and understanding their rights and responsibilities.
  • Contribute youth perspectives in meetings, project working groups, recruitment processes, and training workshops.
  • Strengthen the conflict resolution capacity of young people in KAVI programs.
  • Maintain appropriate notes to document outcomes of meetings, conflict resolution sessions, and training workshops.
  • Debrief sessions with the social worker and School Programs Manager.
  • Ensure professional standards are upheld, including KAVI principles, Child Safe Standards, and the Code of Ethical Practice framework in Youth Empowerment Work.

Qualifications:
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Good writing skills and the ability to maintain correspondence with a variety of agencies, clients, and stakeholders
  • Highly developed ability for problem-solving
  • Knowledgeable in crisis intervention principles and practices
  • Demonstrates adaptability to perform a variety of duties, occasionally changing from one task to another of a different nature without loss of efficiency or composure
  • Ability to maintain integrity and professional rapport towards students, school staff, and other KAVI team members
  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice system
  • A passion for the work of community development, youth development, and social equity
  • A desire for professional growth
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team
  • Basic computer skills are a plus but not required
  • A basic ability to work independently and or as a team player
  • Attention to detail and customer service skills are a must

Possible Shifts: Vary per site; generally, Violence Prevention Specialist work
at least 10 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Saturday programs operate quarterly.
