Job Summary

Follows established guidelines to investigate complaints alleging violations of the Privacy, and Breach Notification Rules of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). This includes gathering, summarizing, and analyzing evidence pursuant to investigations and making recommendations to the Compliance Manager. Also responsible for maintaining case files and responding to patient and employee correspondences and telephone calls.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimun Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent
Minimum Years of Experience: 5 Years of experience in applicable field or healthcare setting
Substitutable Education & Experience: None.
Required Certifications/Licensure: Certification in HIPAA Privacy (or must be able to obtain within one year of hire date)
Required Training: Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and ability to use this knowledge in performing tasks;
Comprehensive knowledge of the application of health information privacy laws to covered entities.

Essential Functions
  • Conducts complaint investigations and reviews under the authority of the HIPAA Rules.
  • Gathers information provided by patients or employees to determine whether the complaint raises an allegation of a violation of the HIPAA Rules.
  • Develops and drafts investigative plans and data requests; interviews witnesses and other involved parties, and violation letters of findings.
  • Conducts administrative work associated with the disposition of health information privacy complaints.
  • Makes formal presentations on various aspects of the HIPAA Rules.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Actively follows up on pending inquires to ensure that there are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with outstanding written and oral communication skills. Will participate in correspondence with patients, employees, etc.
  • Experienced and tactful in reviewing, analyzing, and communicating documents or information.
  • Maintains Privacy Log and an Accounting of Disclosures.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as required in an emergency, i.e., fire or disaster.
