If you want to advance to a Machine Operator, we can train you on what you need to move to a dirt crew. Or, if you’d like to advance your career as part of the pipe crew, you’ll have opportunities to progress to a Tailman and then Pipelayer.
When you join our team, you’ll have the opportunity to go through our own Petticoat-Schmitt training and certification for pipelayers. You’ll also get ongoing training and opportunities for future advancement.

Our work includes construction services for public works, water resources, wastewater treatment plants (WWTP), and site development. Your Responsibilities as a Front End Loader Operator & Hillman
As a Front End Loader Operator and Hillman at Petticoat-Schmitt, you’ll need a solid background running a loader and providing the material that’s needed to support a crew.
- Getting the Material and Running the Loader – You’ll be on the loader about a quarter of the time, getting materials, stone, parts, etc. – whatever is needed for the job in the hole.
- Assisting the Tailman and Pipelayer – You’ll be on the top of the side of the trench, working with the rest of the pipe crew to get the stuff they need for the hill.
- Slinging Up Pipe – You’ll put materials around the pipe such as gaskets and prepare them to be brought into the hole. We’ll train you on what to do.
- Running the Hill – You are the key to keeping the flow going. You need to know how to judge when to get stone and pipe to the crew in the hole before they need it.

- You have past experience running a Front End Loader, but want to do more.

- You have experience as a Hillman, working with a pipe crew.

Requirements for the Front End Loader Operator & Hillman Position at Petticoat-Schmitt:
- At least 6 months experience working as a Front End Loader Operator and working with a pipe crew
- Must have own hard hat, steel-toed boots, safety vest, and orange shirt and wear for the interview
- Experience working with large-diameter pipes in commercial construction
- Must be willing and able to climb in and out of trenches and work 20 to 30’ down in hole
- Must have reliable transportation and be willing to commute within a 50-mile radius around Jacksonville and surrounding areas, including counties of Nassau, Clay, Duval, and St. Johns
- Must be available to work overtime and weekends as needed
- Must be willing to undergo a background check
