Duties
  • You will determine what equipment to use when working with live circuits.
  • You will follow drawings or diagrams to perform work on circuits, distribution networks, or equipment interconnections.
  • You will clean tools and equipment to keep the work area clean and orderly.
  • You will install and maintain different types of high or low voltage electrical distribution equipment.
  • You will operate technical test equipment (e.g., oscillators, meggers, phase sticks, phase rotation meter, digital test equipment, fault finding equipment) to troubleshoot distribution circuits.
  • You will diagnose and determine corrective action for electric power controlling equipment (e.g., switch gear, transformer banks, circuits breakers).

The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to do the work of HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Installing wire or cable distribution lines from public utility supply point to distribution substations; 2) Setting proper wire tension or sag in accordance with strength and weight of wire, length of span, and wire contraction and expansion in temperature changes; and 3) Understanding drawings and diagrams of distribution network, equipment, and control circuits. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to do the work of HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN without more than normal supervision performing duties such as: 1) Installing transformers, capacitors, insulators, switches, circuit breakers, and fuses in connection with main distribution lines; 2) Using test equipment such as ohmmeters, voltage testers, clamp-on ammeters, and meggers to determine high resistance, grounds and open circuits; 3) Climbing poles to string overhead wire; and 4) Driving bucket trucks to install and repair electrical equipment and cables. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The incumbent can be expected to work on power poles, at ground level, and in underground trenches or manholes. Work requires bending, stooping, climbing, standing and working in awkward and strained positions for long periods of time. Coordination of eyes, hands, legs, and body is essential in installing, repairing, and testing electrical equipment in confined spaces such as manholes and overhead structures. Uses normal color perception to identify wires by color code. Performs moderately heavy lifting, pulling, carrying of equipment, and materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works outside 90 percent of the time in all kinds of weather. Works on poles up to 65 feet high. Works with voltage up to 69,000 volts. Works below ground in electrical vaults and trenches, and sewer lift stations. Is subjected to the danger of electrical shock and burns when working on live circuits and burns from soldering irons and molten metal when working on wires and cables. may be exposed to extreme heat when working in stormy weather conditions when working outside, and wet, slippery walking surfaces in and around manholes. Injuries suffered could include cuts, bruises, sprains, broken limbs, and electrical shock. Is exposed to injury from explosions of equipment, cables in vaults, HIGH VOLTAGE electrical shock (up to 69KV), falls, broken bones, cuts and bruises. Uses safety glasses, goggles, face shields, rubber gloves, barriers, flags, safety belts, insulated tools, foul weather gear, and other safety gear to ensure maximum personal safety.
This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required
