Campbell Hall, founded in 1944 and situated on a 15-acre campus in Studio City, California, is an independent, all-gender, college preparatory, Episcopal day school for students in kindergarten through grade 12. Campbell Hall is a community of inquiry committed to academic excellence and to the nurturing of decent, loving, and responsible human beings. As an Episcopal school, Campbell Hall thrives as an interfaith community that actively seeks to learn from the many religious traditions represented by faculty, students, and families.

The school is committed to fostering a community dedicated to honoring the diversity of the human experience. Campbell Hall welcomes candidates who have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in their teaching and learning. Campbell Hall believes in and operates on the premise that it is the right of all persons to seek work and to advance on the basis of their individual merits, ability, and potential. Campbell Hall Faculty Description

Campbell Hall seeks faculty who are dedicated to the developmentally appropriate education of the whole child; who are interested in learning as well as teaching; who connect their responsibilities with the philosophy and purpose of the school; who teach to empower as well as to inform; who are comfortable with questions as well as answers; who can work with direction, focus, humor, and dignity within the complexities of a diverse school environment; and who will be dedicated to promoting and maintaining an inclusive school community.

Campbell Hall faculty embrace the school’s mission and are dedicated in their implementation of a vigorous college preparatory academic program. They are equally devoted to the emotional and spiritual development of each student and they strive to relate to students, parents, and colleagues in ways that promote open and supportive communication. The result is a community where students and adults are confident to learn and grow.

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Five classes:

    • Photography (2 or 3 sections)

    • Photography Advanced (2 or 3 sections)

  • General lesson plans will be provided; the substitute will be responsible for specific lesson plans and grading.

Photography: In this year-long introduction to photography, students will learn the fundamentals of making photographs using the black-and-white darkroom. The curriculum includes how to operate a 35mm single lens reflex camera, process film, make contact sheets and enlargements. In addition, students will learn the language of photography through the study of various visual elements including composition, light, and form. This vocabulary will be used in class discussion, research, presentation, and written assignments. Additionally, students will gain experience in critical discourse through group critique. As our world is now saturated with images, the study of both contemporary and historical photographers will place the medium of photography within a larger cultural context. Photographic assignments are designed to help students learn something specific about camera operation, darkroom technique, and the visual language of photographs. Example assignments include: mood, portraiture, self-portraiture, landscape, and narrative. Within the parameters of each project, students are encouraged to photograph what intrigues them most. By the end of the course, students will develop a portfolio of work that spans varied subject matter, all of which is important to them. (Grades 9-12)

Photography Advanced: In this semester course, students pursue their study of photography on an individualized basis with a focus on each student finding their voice as a photographer. S1 is dedicated to digital photography and color printing while S2 is focused on advanced film and darkroom technique in black-and-white. Through open-ended prompts, students may choose their own subjects and design their own projects. In addition to expanding their vision as photographers, students will learn more in-depth camera operation and exposure techniques, lighting, use of Adobe Creative Suite, digital printing, and darkroom printing on large paper. In the search of finding their personal vision, students will investigate various aspects of the history of photography and its traditions, collect inspiration in sketchbooks, and refine their skills in analyzing photographs. By the end of the course, students will have developed a new body of work along with a written artist statement. (Grades 10-12; one semester; prerequisite: Photography)

  • Minimum 3 years of full-time teaching experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher, degree in Visual Art or Photography preferred
