Overview
The Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division of PNNL is accelerating the transition to a decarbonized, efficient, resilient, and secure energy system through basic and applied research. We leverage a strong technical foundation in power and energy systems and in advanced data analytics to drive innovation, transform markets, and shape energy policy.
Responsibilities
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high-caliber sophomore or junior High School students for intern assignment within the High School Student Research Intern (HS SRI) Program. This internship provides an opportunity for students interested in preparing for careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM - or Computer Science) to work during the academic year with a scientist/mentor in a specified research area. Students attend regular classes in their school for half a day and work up to four hours a day, five days each week at the Laboratory. Students must be part of a required work-based learning class. HS SRI is a 36-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for academic cohort will be August 27, 2024.
Summer student will:
  • Learn about PNNL's capabilities in power systems and renewable power modeling
  • Develop a professional portfolio

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, or junior in a public or private High School at time of application
  • Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing)

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Course work in Statistics, Physics (electricity and magnetism), Electronics, Probability & Statistics
  • Computer skills in Python, Linux, or a can-do attitude to attaining these skills
  • Must have a growth mindset and be willing and eager to learn

HSPD-12 PIV Credential Requirement
In accordance with Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, new employees are required to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. This investigation includes a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last year. This includes marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
Mandatory Requirements
Please be aware that the Department of Energy (DOE) prohibits DOE employees and contractors from having any affiliation with the foreign government of a country DOE has identified as a "country of risk" without explicit approval by DOE and Battelle.
