Heavy Equipment Operator - Distribution & Collections

Job Summary: Performs a variety of support activities in the Water & Sewer Maintenance department including operating a Vactor truck, backhoe, and forklift and in addition to a truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, or crushed rock; engages in repair and maintenance of sewers and water lines.

Essential Functions:
Regular and timely attendance at work.
Performs work in cleaning sewer lines and manholes, repairing broken sewer lines, and replacing worn and damaged parts; use sewer tape to unclog debris in line, use Vactor to run sewer mains to break up grease in line.
Performs sewer repair by cutting out bad pieces, replacing ferncos, and working carefully around utilities such as electrical power, gas, phone, and underground cable.
Participates in connecting sewer lines to mains using full circle clamps, shuts off valves; works carefully around utilities.
Uses sewer tee or saddle to make sewer tap; installs cleanouts for access into line.
Carries out installation and repair of water taps by placing the tapping saddle and machine to cut out the hole on the main run tubing and installs the water meter/box.
Operates and repairs equipment such as jackhammers, pumps, air compressors, and other equipment used in repair and maintenance of sewers; change oil and filters on motorized equipment, washes and sprays down tools, replaces any worn out tools.
Inspects truck equipment and supplies such as tires, lights, brakes, gas, oil, and water.
Repairs manholes by repairing the ring/cover that is damaged; seals around pipes entering manhole to prevent inflow infiltration, place plugs in sewer lines.

Assists other crews in the department with water/sewer repairs, line construction, Street Department, and others in order to complete large projects or due to a lack of personnel.
Serves as "essential personnel" and remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man made disaster, or any other event the Director of Public Works, Assistant City Manager, or the City Manager deem necessary.
Contributes to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:
High school diploma or equivalent required.
A minimum of two (2) years related experience and/or training in maintenance or construction work, including some operation of light motorized equipment; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Currently possess a valid Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement, or the ability to obtain within 90 days from hire date. This license is a condition of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to utilize hand tools and instruments as described under "tools and equipment".
Ability to follow instructions, both written and oral.
Ability to operate a City crew truck, rescue saw, 2" water pump, weed eater, chain saw, clay cutters, tapping machine, tubing cutters, pipe wrenches, ratchets, hand saws, level, pressure gauges, sewer taps, sewer balloons, metal detectors, and base maps.
Must be able to drive City vehicle for business purposes and maintain insurability and valid license.
