Overview

AIR is currently seeking a Health Economist to join our Health Division. The selected candidate will join a strong team of Health Economists in the practice area of Evaluation, Methods, and Analytics, which has a diversified portfolio of projects, and benefit from various mentoring and learning opportunities.  The Health Economist conducts policy-related research and evaluation studies in the areas of domestic health care program evaluation and research, including topics such as Medicare, Medicaid, and other public health insurance programs; innovative delivery and payment models; rural hospitals; aging and long-term care; health plan performance and quality measurement; telehealth; and health information technology.  Use your experience, knowledge, and education to help us deliver on our mission: to contribute to a better, more equitable world.

 

Candidates hired for the position may work remotely within the United States (U.S.) or from one of our U.S. office locations. This does not include U.S. territories.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for the position include:

  • Research and support innovative delivery and payment models intended to improve quality of care and health care finances.
  • Process and analyze large data sets, such as Medicare/Medicaid claims.
  • Manage and contribute to the development of proposals and writing of technical reports and public-facing content, tailored to the client and customer needs.
  • Develop and conduct presentations to government clients.
  • Effectively coach others to promote their development; set developmental goals and measurements for staff.
  • Foster an environment that embraces diverse perspectives, abilities, racial/ethnic and cultural backgrounds, ages, gender identities and expressions, educational experiences, and life stories. 
Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (other advanced degrees may be considered) in economics, health services research, public policy, or a related social science field.
  • At least 1 to 2 years of experience post completion of the PhD.
  • Experience with mixed-methods evaluation methods.
  • Expertise in experimental and/or quasi-experimental designs including regression-based difference-in-differences models, regression discontinuity, and instrumental variables.
  • Expertise in artificial intelligence methods is a plus, but not required. 
  • Previous internship or work experience with Alternative Payment Models is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with Medicare hospital and primary care payments is a plus but not required.
  • Experience with Medicare or Medicaid claims data analysis is a plus but not required.

 Skills:

  • Strong quantitative skills.
  • Strong programming skills (e.g., Stata, R, SAS, SQL, Python).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical material.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with individuals at all levels and from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work efficiently in a virtual work environment.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. Employment-based visa sponsorship (including H-1B sponsorship) is not available for this position. Depending on project work, qualified candidates may need to meet certain residency requirements.

AIR's Total Rewards Program, is designed to reward our staff competitively and motivate them to achieve our critical mission. This position offers an anticipated annual salary of $120,000 - $140,000. Salary offers are made based on internal equity within the institution and external equity with competitive markets. Please note this is the annual salary range for candidates that are based in the United States.
