The Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at Assistant or Associate Professor level. Faculty candidates must have training in health economics with research experience in conducting analyses related to efficiency and effectiveness of healthcare. Strong candidates will demonstrate an ability to develop well-designed applications for federal research funding, support clinical and health services researchers in development of economic aims in applications for federal funding, and have a background of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Research addressing population health, developing programs to optimize utilization of resources, or investigating the cost of disparities in care is valued. Expertise in conducting retrospective data analysis using large national datasets, conducting cost effectiveness analyses on randomized controlled trials or experience conducting economic analyses on VA or health system electronic medical record data would also be encouraged. Successful candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for developing and working with multidisciplinary teams and engaging faculty and trainees.
Position Requirements:
Applicants must have a doctoral degree (i.e. PhD) with strong theoretical grounding and training in economic principles and the health care industry, excellent oral and written communication skills to support rigorous program of research, and experience in developing and conducting cost and cost effectiveness analyses. The candidate will be appointed in the Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine with tenure-track appointment, and research center membership at the Center for Advancing Population Science. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.
Roles and Expectations:
Build an independent and externally funded portfolio.
Support multidisciplinary research teams in federal funding applications.
Maintain scholarly productivity through publications of peer reviewed manuscripts and speaking at national/international conferences.
Advise master’s and doctoral students and mentor medical students in health economics.
Conduct quantitative analyses and review analyses conducted by master’s level statisticians in support of cost and cost effectiveness analyses.
Support Department and Division goals to increase research productivity through collaborations with clinical faculty.
Possibility to teach graduate level courses to master’s and doctoral students.
About Division of General Internal Medicine
The Division of General Internal Medicine is the largest of ten divisions within the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The mission is best expressed through its commitment to patient care, medical education, research, and innovation, as well as its regional and national presence as a leader in the comprehensive care and treatment of the adult patient. The Division consists of four Sections: Primary Care, Hospitalist Medicine, Perioperative and Consultative Medicine, and the VA General Internal Medicine (including both primary care and hospitalist medicine). Division members provide clinical service in the areas of inpatient, primary, and urgent care at both Froedtert Hospital and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. They also foster innovation and conduct research in patient care and clinical knowledge, with the aim to reduce the cost of medical care through clinical efficiency and patient education. Many faculty members serve in leadership roles with of the Society of General Internal Medicine, the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physicians, and many present frequently at regional and national meetings of these societies. The Division is home to many of the key educational leaders in the Department of Medicine, including six internal medicine residency associate program directors, three clerkship directors, three leaders of M1-2 Discovery Curriculum courses, and many elective rotation directors.
About Center for Advancing Population Science
The mission of the Center for Advancing Population Sciences (CAPS) is to develop, test, and implement innovative strategies for transforming healthcare that optimizes quality, value, and cost. As an interdisciplinary group of health services researchers collaborating in a diverse array of subject areas, CAPS conducts research on health care services and related health outcomes, facilitates a supportive environment for MCW investigators developing externally funded research programs, determines the need for and recruits new faculty in targeted methodologic areas, and provides a seminar series to enhance collaboration. In bringing together a diverse group of investigators, the Center fosters the creation of innovative ideas regarding how to evaluate and improve population health across diverse populations and geographic regions. Research focus areas include health systems, population health research, health disparities/health equity, and implementation science. In addition, efforts have focused on building international collaborations to support innovative research, analysis, implementation and impact at a global level.
