Overview


Tanaq Management Services (TMS) delivers professional, scientific, and technical services and information technology (IT) solutions to federal agencies in the health, agriculture, technology, and other government services. TMS is a subsidiary of the St. George Tanaq Corporation, an Alaskan Native Corporation (ANC) committed to serving Federal customers while also giving back to the Tanaq native community and shareholders.


About the Role


We are seeking a Health Communications Specialist to support communication activities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Health Communications Specialist will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support Clean Slate implementation and development of health communication content. This position requires a keen eye for detail.


Responsibilities

  • Utilize mastery of health communication principles, methods, theories, practices, and techniques to serve as a technical authority and to strategically carry out communication plans for development to dissemination.
  • Use knowledge of health communication goals and objectives, primary and secondary data sources, environmental scanning, need assessments, and health/risk communication.
  • Apply knowledge of public health terminology and of how public health program(s) and strategies work at local, state, & federal levels.
  • Use knowledge of scientific jargon and ability to translate it into plain language.
  • Utilize mastery of oral communication techniques to lead teams and work groups, make presentations, serve as a spokesperson, and conduct meetings designed to solicit input on public health program issues.
  • Apply mastery of written communication techniques to write a variety of documents, including descriptions of communication and marketing programs and projects, communication, and marketing plans, reports of audience research results, scopes of work, and training tools.
  • Work closely with team, engaging with it often and keeping it updated. Work independently but also ask questions to ensure team communications are clear and coordinated.
  • Develop and update websites with new content material from subject-matter experts, team members, and leaders and disseminate condition specific project information and project findings through the website and other electronically based health communication mechanisms.
  • Provide consultation services to the CDC to develop public health content for diverse website audiences, develop communication products, promotional materials, curricula, and other resources.
Requirements:


Required Experience and Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of prior related experience.
  • Previous CDC and or public health department experience highly desirable.
  • Experience writing, reviewing, and editing communication materials.
  • Knowledge of scientific jargon and ability to translate it into plain language.
  • Ability to create communication products from start to finish, ensuring they align with strategic goals.
  • Strong proofreading skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience writing in plain language.
  • Ability to synthesize complex program information and effectively communicate information in written and oral format to various audiences.
  • Experience working with high-level leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Familiarity with CDC processes, as well as key clearance terminology.
  • Ability to work within tight timelines without clear guidelines or instructions, and being able to pivot when necessary.
  • Ability to identify gaps in existing resources. Forward looking thinker, who actively seeks opportunities and proposes solutions.
  • Self-sufficient with demonstrated proactive approaches to problem solving with strong decision-making capabilities.
  • Experience in facilitating quick turn-around for complex documents.
  • Experience in assisting in the preparation of documents for public audiences.
  • Experience in the use of Zoom, MS Teams, and Microsoft Office software (i.e., Word; Excel; PowerPoint; Outlook).
  • Demonstrated experience with formative research to inform communication strategies, audience segmentation.
  • Previous work on or managed large scale multi-media communication campaigns.
  • Superior multi-tasking and organization skills. Must manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous projects, remaining flexible to changing priorities and new initiatives.
  • Ability to obtain a government clearance.
  • Analyze organizational goals and objectives, operating environment, and business processes to determine most efficient methods of accomplishing work.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field such as: Communications (journalism, advertising, public relations); or English (writing/editing); or Public Health. Master’s degree preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
