Overview


Tanaq Government Services (TGS) delivers professional, scientific, and technical services and information technology (IT) solutions to federal agencies in health, technology, and other government services. About the Role

We are seeking a Health Communications Specialistto support a high-profile Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) publication. Responsible for working with other CDC Health Communications, scientific, and management staff to plan and develop content, and assist in the productions of information material for use in print and electronic media. The HCS must work collaboratively with internal and external partners and develop dissemination plans to ensure messages meet communication objectives and audience needs, are consistent, and could be disseminated rapidly through appropriate channels to reach target audiences. The specialist shall select, develop, and utilize a variety of channels to disseminate information. The specialist will track and report on dissemination metrics and results and will make adjustments and improvements to dissemination based on results.

Responsibilities

  • Manage collaboration with team, consult with online editor and communications lead to propose new tasks or activities to various programs and team;
  • Develop, edit, clear, and promote communications packages and graphics for reports, including facilitating response clearance of COVID-19-related reports and preparing communications packages for final reviews with staff;
  • Design, edit, format, and resize graphics to support the promotion of reports on website and social media;
  • Develop graphic concepts and work with graphic designer to develop graphics, and work with authors and team, program, and response staff to clear graphics for dissemination;
  • Manage development and clearance of communications packages for non-COVID reports using team’s automated SharePoint process, including coordinating with programs, authors, and team staff to clear communications materials;
  • Schedule approved social media on the publication’s social media channels using social media scheduling tool and coordinate with the social media team in OADC to schedule social media content on main CDC social media accounts;
  • Facilitate translation requests, packages, graphics, social media, etc. into Spanish and other languages as needed;
  • Develop, maintain, and follow standard operating procedures for communications team tasks (e.g., web materials, social media scheduling, etc.);
  • Liaise with communication staff in programs and COVID-19 response on timelines and deliverables;
  • Develop weekly/serial and Early Release web materials instructional document for web and desktop publishing team according to established SOPs;
  • Assist with tasks and projects related to website design to improve user experience of the publication’s website;
  • Attend weekly team and other staff meetings.
Requirements:


Required Experience and Skills

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Previous CDC and/or public health experience in a government setting highly desirable.
  • Strong Health Communications skills are required.
  • Prepare graphics material using software such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, PowerPoint, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience supporting graphics on website and social media.
  • Develop graphics according to Agency guidelines, as well as the publication’s style, works with existing parameters.
  • Experience translating dense, scientific material into language appropriate for various audiences.
  • Experience with plain language and risk communications.
  • Understanding of public health communication strategy and training, including ability to synthesize and distill information into key points.
  • Experience collaborating with stakeholders and external partners.
  • Flexibility and ability to balance priorities that frequently change.
  • Capacity to learn new subject matter quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing deadlines.
  • Experience acting as a liaison with CDC programs or other federal agency partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to obtain government clearance.

Education and Training

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Communications (journalism, advertising, public relations), English (writing/editing) or related field required.
  • Master of Public Health, Communications, or related field highly desired.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. May need to lift 25 pounds regularly.
