EHS assists the campus community with compliance and promotes health, safety, and environmental stewardship.
As a Health and Safety Specialist for a large ivy league research university, support and provide oversight for several impressive operations on our 2,300-acre main campus. For instance, main campus has 260 major facilities and over 7,000 union and non-union employees to maintain facilities, utilities, and provide support to student and research operations. In addition to this labor-power Cornell contracts approximately $130 million in capital construction and major renovations projects annually to keep our facilities pristine and further our research mission.
Beyond the construction, facilities maintenance, and utilities operations, our campus includes a 153-room hotel with two-eateries operated by seasoned hospitality professionals and students from Cornell's world-renowned School of Hotel Administration. The Student and Campus Life organization manages residence halls, student events, athletic complexes, and Cornell Dining which is among the 10 best in the nation with more than 30 campus eateries. In addition, an Animal Hospital that employs nearly 400 employees, a world-renowned Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory, and so much more. With general oversight and direction from the Associate Director, Occupational Health and Safety, the Health and Safety Specialist works within a multi-disciplinary group of environmental Health and Safety professionals and is responsible for assigned Health and Safety programs, and other injury prevention projects for the Ithaca campus and outlying facilities, except for the Weill Medical College & Qatar. The primary function of the position is to provide coordination and supportive duties for the administration and maintenance of occupational health, safety, and injury prevention programs and initiatives. The incumbent will develop and implement initiatives, procedures, programs, and training that promote a safe, healthful, and compliant environment for all faculty, staff, and students. Additionally, the incumbent will perform inspections, provide industrial hygiene services, technical support, and compliance guidance to university personnel and their operations.
The Health and Safety Specialist is expected to contribute to a positive and respectful working environment. The incumbent must effectively work independently and in a team with a variety of diverse staff, faculty, and students. Stakeholders include university employees, students, , the New York State Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, FM Global Insurance, and other local, state, and federal agencies.
The specific compliance programs assigned are identified under the Duties and Responsibilities section. All programs under this function must be in a sustainable state of "in-control and capable" functionality.
We require these qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health, occupational Health and Safety, toxicology, safety sciences, public health, or related science, or a bachelor's degree in a scientific field with Health and Safety work experience, with up to 2-3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong technical writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the university; must be able to read, understand, and interpret regulations.
  • Knowledge of OSHA's Construction, General Industry and Recordkeeping.
  • Knowledge of industrial hygiene (IH) equipment and basic sampling procedures (classroom experience is acceptable).
  • Operational skills in various MS-Office based computer programs and database management.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a close attention to detail.
  • Excellent time and project management skills to routinely deal with multiple projects, and program needs.
  • Commitment to provide excellent customer service.
  • Ability to pass a background check as required by Cornell University.
  • Must have an unrestricted, valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30lbs and have manual dexterity.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment including, air purifying & supplied air respirators, hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, and protective clothing.

You will be a top candidate with our preferred qualifications:
  • Board certification in a recognized professional Health and Safety discipline, such as industrial hygiene (CIH) or safety professional (ASP, CHST, or CSP).
  • Experience with EHS management systems such as ISO 14001, ISO 45001, OSHAS 18000, ANZI Z0, or VPP.
  • Knowledge of NYS Health and Safety Code Rules, and ACGIH TLVs and BEIs, is a plus.
  • Experience in an academic or research institution setting and working in a diverse culture strongly desired.
  • Experience working directly with external agencies and organizations (OSHA, DOL, NIOSH, NFPA, FM Global). Strong knowledge and experience with safety compliance management programs.
  • Experience in MS-SharePoint
  • Experience in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response activities and training.
  • Strong leadership skills and knowledge of organizational change.
