Job Description

The objective of the Head Lifeguard is to provide customer service through education and enforcement of all pool rules while overseeing the safety of all patrons in and around the aquatic facility; provides oversight of the lifeguard staff; provides instruction, organization, and supervision of swimming lessons and other programs. The Head Lifeguard also takes a supervisory role to prevent and respond to accidents and eliminates or minimizes hazardous situations as identified.


Job Responsibilities

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.

  • Plans lessons, conducts training for staff and develops staff as instructors.
  • Instructs participants with learning required skills while promoting skill progression.
  • Submits reports and paperwork as appropriate; distributes cards to participants.
  • Prepares class lists, course records and evaluations.
  • Provides program participants with water safety knowledge and procedures and provides overall protection and supervision of swim classes and other programs.
  • Assists in directing staff on maintenance of facility.
  • Handles public concerns, problems, or suggestions in a calm, professional and courteous manner.
  • Schedules lifeguard staff appropriately, ensures appropriate staffing levels based on bather load and ensures that rotation schedules are followed.
  • Closes facility at the end of each day and provides other services as backup to Aquatic Center Manager.
  • Respectfully assists citizens by answering questions and explaining the responsibilities of the division/department.
  • Assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment and in other duties, as appropriate or assigned.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education and Experience:

  • Must have knowledge of water safety practices and usage of water safety equipment.
  • Two (2) years’ experience in pool operations, preferred.

    Required Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid Texas driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Current lifeguard, CPR for Professional Rescue and First Aid required.
  • Current Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certifications or ability to obtain within 180 days of hire date.
  • Current Lifeguard Instructor certifications or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire date.

Required Knowledge of:

  • Records keeping policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Customer service etiquette.
  • Computer skills including data entry.
  • Safety policies, procedures, and practices.

    Required Abilities

  • Ability to respond to complaints and grievances posed by the public.
  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations.
  • Ability to use good judgement and effectively handle problems.
  • Ability to interact tactfully and professionally with emotionally distraught citizens.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and filing systems.

    Language Skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor and the public.
  • Ability to read City policies and procedures, written instructions, general correspondence, MSDS sheets, safety manuals, traffic signs and warning labels.

    Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to calculate basic mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).

  • Job may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May be exposed to potentially dangerous chemicals.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Inside and outside environment during all kinds of weather events.
  • Repetitive activities (performance of same physically demanding activity).
  • Dirty environment (situations in which workers or their clothing can become dirty, greasy, etc.).
  • May work in ditches, trenches or confined spaces.
