Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Sports Medicine, the Head Football Athletic Trainer will perform the full range of clinical athletic training functions, which involve the planning, oversight, organization and delivery of daily athletic training services to all Football student-athletes. The position is also involved in the development and organization of the sports medicine program.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of injury evaluation, medical care/treatment, injury prevention, and rehabilitation for all Football student-athletes.
  • Oversee all Spartan Athletics Center, Athletic Training room, and satellite site operations.
  • Provide oversight and work coordination to all Athletic Trainers, graduate assistants, and interns working with football student-athletes.
  • Prevent, recognize, assess, and treat athletic injuries. Implement preventive and rehabilitation programs to treat athletic injuries using the appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments.
  • Oversee and coordinate insurance processing and record keeping for all football student-athletes.
  • Coordinate with Director of Sports Medicine athletic training programs and assist in program development, including coordinating Simpkins training room operations.
  • Use a variety of therapeutic modalities including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity and rehabilitation and exercise equipment, and apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
  • Educate and counsel student-athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training and rehabilitation.
  • Attend all home and away athletic events, providing onsite medical coverage to all Football Student-Athletes.
  • Oversee and administer all institutional drug testing for football student-athletes.
  • Oversee all NCAA drug testing for football student-athletes.
  • Communicate injuries/players' medical wellness updates with Football coaching staff and athletic performance staff.
  • Develop and administer rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries, including assisting in scheduling and assigning students for physical therapy.
  • Assist with Football recruiting visits - presenting/providing Sports Medicine services and general information.
  • Oversee and maintain appropriate medical records of injuries, treatment plans and progress for all Football student-athletes.
  • Organize the process of all pre-participation physicals for all football athletes, coordinating with new and returning student-athletes, physicians, and other providers.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Incumbents must possess comprehensive and in-depth knowledge of the principles and practices of Athletic Training including conditioning and injury prevention, as well as injury assessment and rehabilitation
  • Ability to establish program priorities
  • Must possess knowledge of the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) pertaining to student-athletes, their training sports medicine care, and health and safety
  • Ability to provide work direction and training to other Athletic Trainers
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced proficiency maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standard
  • Ability to develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with applicable regulatory agencies
  • Ability to ensure accurate maintenance of insurance records and billings following insurance procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced proficiency in developing conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced proficiency in using the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries
  • Ability to demonstrate advanced proficiency in recognizing life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid
  • Ability to use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other record keeping functions
  • Must demonstrate the leadership, organizational, and administrative skill involved in coordinating an athletic training room

 

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities
  • Must possess and maintain certification in CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation) for the Professional Rescuer and BOC (Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer) certification
  • Equivalent to three to four years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer with progressive responsibility, including at least one year of experience in a lead capacity with some responsibility for program administration and some experience at the college level

 

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in athletic training or related field of study
  • Three (3) years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a college or professional team setting

 

Compensation

Classification: Head Athletic Trainer
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,667/month - $6,955/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,865/month - $9,389/month
