Job Summary
TheOregon Sea Grant is seeking a Hatfield Visitor Center Coordinator. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
This position oversees operations, exhibits, collaborates with other staff to plan and implement programming at the Hatfield Visitor Center (VC), a marine science museum and aquarium operated by Oregon Sea Grant at Oregon State University's Hatfield Marine Science Center. The VC features hands-on exhibits and public education activities and events and supports STEM education research, development of new exhibits as well as marine education programs for school groups, summer day camps, community groups, and educators.
The VC currently welcomes approximately 70,000 visitors a year but has had as many as 150,000 visitors in prior years. The position works closely with the Oregon Sea Grant (OSG) and Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) communities to develop and implement VC programming consistent with OSG Strategic Plan. The position supervises cashier staff collaborates with OSG education and extension staff, supports fundraising events and activities, and reports to the OSG Associate Director of Education.
Oregon Sea Grant (OSG) is a cooperative program between NOAA Sea Grant and Oregon State University. OSG is responsible for delivering an integrated program of research, extension, and education in four focal areas, Environmental Literacy & Workforce Development, Healthy Coastal Ecosystems, Sustainable Fisheries & Aquaculture, and Resilient Communities & Economies with two cross-cutting principles to enhance diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and accessibility and cultivate and sustain partnerships. The VC has been part of the OSU Hatfield Marine Science Center since it was established in 1965 with the goal of supporting marine science and economic development, and welcomed thousands of visitors from the first year the doors were opened. The Oregon Sea Grant program at OSU was among the first four state Sea Grant programs designated in 1971.

What You Will Need
  • Bachelor's degree in science, education, business administration, marketing or communications, or other related field or combination of relevant education beyond high school and 3 or more years of relevant experience
  • 2 years of work experience in a relevant setting (museum, aquarium, education, etc.)
  • Proficient in e-mail, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and multimedia/newsletter production Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects with involvement of multiple departments and team members
  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment, take initiative, anticipate needs, handle confidential information, organize and prioritize work, communicate effectively with a team and the public
  • Customer service experience and demonstrated ability to resolve conflicts
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, accessibility and Inclusion experience supervising staff or volunteers
  • Experience troubleshooting and working with a variety of technology

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Advanced degree in management, design, communications, education, science or other related field
  • Knowledge or experience with marine and coastal systems and communities, especially those in the Pacific Northwest Experience planning, creating, and maintaining exhibits
  • General knowledge of or work experience applying the principles and practices of project and personnel management, including planning tasks, organizing, prioritizing, directing, motivating, and decision-making
  • Cash handling experience
  • Scheduling and event planning experience
  • Experience with successful fundraising, social media, and marketing of programs Bilingual (Spanish preferred) or multi-lingual (including American Sign Language)

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Work schedule is in-person, Wednesday - Sunday, 8 am - 5pm, with occasional evenings for special events
  • Participates in virtual meetings as a regular part of work
  • Occasional in-state travel to program-wide meetings, meetings with partners, or for professional development
  • Position may occasionally work near or over water or on boats and in outdoor locations
