The Structural & Thermal-Fluids Engineering Group provides innovative multidisciplinary engineering solutions for underwater, ground, air, and space-based prototype systems for national security applications. Examples include the development of structural-material systems for space-based imaging and laser communication terminals, thermal management for high energy laser systems and RF solid-state devices, and aerodynamic designs and multifunctional materials for airborne sensors, hypersonic platforms, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Engineering solutions are developed through the utilization of appropriate technologies coupled with high-fidelity models and multidisciplinary simulations, environmental and performance characterization testing, and the utilization and development of advanced materials to optimize solutions to meet ever increasing performance, size, weight, and environmental challenges.
The group seeks a Summer 2024 intern student in the Mechanical/Aerospace engineering fields of structural, thermal, and Fluids Engineering. Duties could include the following: creating and running analysis models (finite element structural and/or thermal models, CFD models, etc), running of internally-developed multidisciplinary simulation software, analyzing model results and generating new designs based on those results, structural and thermal testing, hardware integration, research and development of new capabilities, and design. The group seeks well-rounded candidates, placing high value on teamwork, collaboration, and diversity in addition to technical skills.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a program of study in engineering (Preferred majors: Mechanical Engineering, Aero/Astro, Aerospace Engineering)
- Completed Mechanics of Materials and Thermal-Fluids or equivalent classes
- GPA 3.0/4.0 or higher
Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
