Job Title: Indian Child Welfare Act Intern

Job Summary:
Are you interested in welfare and social justice for Alaska Native children and families? Join Tlingit & Haida as the Indian Child Welfare Act intern this summer! With your interest in social work, you will work alongside the Tribal Family and Youth Services team to provide culturally responsive social services for youth and families. Day-to-day tasks include assisting the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) team in developing legal briefs, conducting legal research to keep children in family placements, and providing transportation and social services for youth and families. During the summer, you will receive an overview of Tribal Child Welfare Compact, the Title IV-E Foster Care Program, and IV-E agency maintenance funding. You will also learn how to provide culturally responsive social services and about advocating for Alaska Native children and their families. You may assist with youth and elders' programs as needed.
This internship will take place in-person at one of Tlingit & Haida's Family Services Alaska office locations in either Juneau or Anchorage, Alaska. You can indicate your preferred office location for the summer during the application and interview process.
Duties/Responsibilities:

• Gain experience with Indian Child Welfare Act cases and case management
• Learn how to provide culturally relevant services and advocacy to families and their children
• Learn best practices for family reunification
• Case management to families experience Child Welfare
• Providing family contact and visitation to families with children in foster care
• Conduct legal and social service research for best practices
• Collaborate with Child Welfare attorneys for reports and case advocacy
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Organized and passionate about working with families and children
• Interest and experience in social work, education, or early childhood development
• Interest and experience in culturally responsive services
• You will need access to a personal vehicle for this internship.
• Able to both collaborate with a team and work independently

• Ability to meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Must be a Sealaska shareholder, descendant of a shareholder, or spouse of a shareholder
• Ability to travel as needed

Education and Experience:

• Must be age 18 at time of hire

• Must be currently enrolled in post-secondary school/program or a recent graduate (1-2 years)
• Legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred:

• Studying social work, Child Welfare, law, education, psychology, Indigenous studies or early childhood development.
• At least a 2.5 GPA
• Strong critical thinking and research skills
• Self-starter with ability to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
