Duties and Responsibilities :Under direct supervision, performs manual labor duties in the maintenance of grounds and facilities. Mows lawns using hand or powered tools/equipment; plants, transplants and prunes trees and shrubs; cuts down and removes dead or hazardous trees. Under direct supervision of a certified applicator, applies chemicals, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Applies fertilizers and other chemicals under supervision of a certified professional fertilizer applicator Maintains greenhouse for raising flowers and shrubs; removes dirt, rubbish, leaves and other refuse from grounds and woods; maintains roads, storm drains and parking areas; lays out and stripes athletic fields; assists in the maintenance of recreational facilities; may clean and do simple maintenance work indoors; removes snow from roads, walkways and vehicle entrances; drives automobiles, pick-ups, parcel trucks, tractors and power mowers; performs minor maintenance on equipment and small engines including maintaining oil levels, fueling, and cleaning; employee may be assigned direct responsibility for a specific zone or area of campus and required to maintain all aspects or that area relating grounds maintenance and landscape; reports for duty when emergency situations arise, such as power outages, equipment failure, snow storms, etc.; coordinates and cooperates closely with other grounds and maintenance workers and the Grounds Supervisor; performs other related duties as assigned.
Education:High School diploma or GED
Experience:- A minimum of one (1) year of experience or its equivalent, in the care and maintenance of lawns, flowers, trees and the operation and care of related tools and equipment preferred.
- Must be familiar with the proper pruning techniques of International Society of Arboriculture
Ability to read, write, and perform arithmetic calculations; to follow oral and written instructions; to operate and perform minor maintenance to assigned hand and power tools and equipment; operate heavy equipment such as a backhoe, skid steer and aerial lift after appropriate training; to perform work in, on, around, under and over trees, shrubs, and buildings and facilities; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to perform physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying, and frequent heavy lifting; to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Conditions of Employment :Candidates must have a valid Maryland Non-Commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
