Job Title: Grounds/Maintenance Crew
Wage/Hour Status: Nonexempt
Reports to: Facilities Director
Department: Operations
Primary Purpose:
Maintain safe and attractive Grounds and landscaping for the district. Additionally, support the maintenance department with the functionality and appearance of all district facilities.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Minimum high school graduate or equivalent
- Have a clean Indiana driver’s license
- Pass a background check (paid for by applicant during the application process)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to read and understand written instructions
- Ability to effectively communicate with all district stakeholders
- Ability to operate landscaping and Maintenance equipment.
- Ability to operate mowers, power tools, and hand tools.
- Ability to lift, climb, etc…
- Ability work with others and independently to solve problems
Experience:
Maintenance and/or grounds experience preferred but now required
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Grounds and Maintenance
- Mow and detail district grounds including athletic fields as directed.
- Care for trees, shrubs, and flowers by watering, pruning, mulching, caring for beds, and controlling weeds.
- Plant shrubs and vegetation.
- Assist with the preparation of athletic fields for games/practices including care/maintenance of artificial turf surfaces.
- Ice and snow removal
- Collect and dispose of leaves, dirt, rubbish, and refuse from district facilities.
- Move, relocate, load and unload, accept delivery of items such as student furniture or other items that serve the school purpose
- Supporting maintenance department-painting, carpet, plumbing, and other small maintenance duties.
Safety
- Operate tools and equipment according to prescribed safety procedures
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, etc…
- Correct unsafe conditions in the work area and report any conditions that are not safe for employees or students immediately to the supervisor.
- Assist in keeping district vehicles, equipment and tools in clean and safe operation condition
- Inspect and adjust tools and equipment for safe and efficient operation.
- Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment as needed.
- Check vehicle and mower oil, fluid, tire pressure, trailer connection, and lights regularly (including trailers).
Other
- Transport workers and equipment to work sites throughout the district.
- The Facilities Director or his/her designee may assign other duties and responsibilities consistent with the applicable job function and pay grade
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None
Equipment used:
Tractor, skid steer, mowers, gas powered blower, chainsaw, edger, etc…, sprayers, striping machine, garden and hand tools, augers, aerators and snow plow. Light truck and off-road utility vehicles such as a John Deere Gator.

- Continual walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, and heavy lifting and carrying.
- Work outside and around moving objects or vehicles.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals (herbicides and fertilizer), and loud noises.
- Frequent district wide travel.
