Job description

The Grant Writer is a part-time position. Responsibilities include managing the grants and corporate relations programs. This includes research, collaboration with internal stakeholders to determine appropriate grants and corporate entities for solicitation, preparing written proposals, reports, and appropriate record keeping associated with grants and corporate giving. The Grant Writer will be responsible for developing and maintaining a positive working relationship with grant funders and corporate giving staff.

The Grant Writer will capitalize on the longstanding history of service and success of the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home to ensure continued development in this area to sustain and grow the ministry. The Grant Writer will support the Development Department through the development and implementation of strategies for the solicitation of gifts from foundations and corporations to support the Children’s Home goals and priorities. The Grant Writer will maintain an active pool of current and potential Foundation and Corporate donors utilizing face-to-face, phone, mail, electronic and social media mediums to engage them. The Grant Writer is under the supervision of the Chief Development Officer.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and three years of related experience in a similar position preferred; or any combination of training, education and experience which would provide the required knowledge, abilities and skills.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results.
  • Proven success in establishing relationships with individuals and corporate entities.
  • Thorough understanding of local, state, and federal funding sources and the ability to locate potential sources for funding.
  • Extremely organized, meticulous with details, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to prioritize work and resources independently.
  • Ability to assess and interpret the needs and wishes of prospective and current donors and to translate these into effective action plans utilizing moves management.
  • Ability to collaborate with organizational staff in order to identify and match needs of the various departments.
  • Requires the ability to analyze situations and implement appropriate actions and responses.
  • Strong writing and proofreading skills in order to develop professional reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to clearly articulate the mission of the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize and review work in order to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to gather data, analyze information, and prepare reports.
  • Knowledge of fundraising principles strategies, processes, and available resources.
  • Strong ability to take initiative and follow through with minimal supervision.
  • Must be a people person, with exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with internal and external audiences.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Ability to work and positively function within a team environment.
  • Attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Knowledge of computer systems and productivity software is required. Familiar with standard Microsoft Office applications and Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge or similar contact data management system is preferred.
  • Must have the sensitivity to the service population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Sound understanding of financial reports and budgeting is required.
  • Occasional overnight travel may be required.
  • Additional hours may be required to attend meetings, fundraising, and programmatic events.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the Chief Development Officer in the development of measurable goals and objectives for the grants plan.
  • Create a plan for a sophisticated foundation and corporate relations program that will build strong relationships with appropriate constituent groups in order to support Children’s Home goals and priorities.
  • Maintain a thorough research program to determine the giving patterns of local, regional and national foundations and corporations.
  • Develop an active list of contacts in order to interact with external sources for the procurement of gifts and grants.
  • Research, cultivate and solicit proposals each per year based on goal established in annual development plan which will support department and organizational goals.
  • Schedule visits with funders as appropriate to cultivate and steward foundation and corporate relationships.
  • Write complex, high-quality documents such as solicitation proposals, grant applications, technical reports, and communication materials.
  • Maintain active Road Map that will accurately reflect status of grants and corporate giving program.
  • Maintains records in Raiser’s Edge, including those used to record donor engagements, track contributions, and maintain accurate mailing lists in appropriate electronic formats.
  • Coordinate the proposal process to include arrangement of meetings, drafting preliminary inquiries, development of timetables, and review of proposals and assurance of interdepartmental coordination.
  • Prepare proposals and related materials to potential funders in coordination with Department Directors as required.
  • Maintain a central file of proposals, technical and financial records and reports, and a clearinghouse for proposals and application forms.
  • Prepare regular communications to familiarize department directors about the trends and interests of foundations and corporations.
  • Keep abreast of federal and state legislation, which would have a direct or indirect bearing on the preparation of proposals.
  • Assist in the formulation of the annual Development Plan and budget needs.
  • Manage donor stewardship through the development, maintenance and growth of meaningful relationships with current and prospective donors.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and other projects to non-foundation or corporation projects as requested.

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represents the Children’s Home at church, business and community meetings.
  • Conducts tours and/or gives presentations.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Must hold a valid Florida Driver’s License
