Job Title: Grant Writer

Status: Full-time, exempt

Location: Up to 100% remote with the option to work from either the San Francisco, CA or Gainesville, FL offices if located in either of these areas.

Schedule: M-F; 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (PT or ET), occasional evenings, weekends and travel

Salary: $65,000-$75,000

Reports to: CEO or COO

mid-sized nonprofit organizations improve their fundraising operations, including securing funds from individual donors; private foundations; and local, state and federal government agencies. We also work with businesses and corporations to develop corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.

Position Summary:Grant Writers (GW) at AMC are responsible for making significant contributions to our clients' work and to the communities they support through skillfully crafting grants. The GW will work collaboratively with the AMC team to coordinate grant-related activities, communicate with clients, assist with research, write compelling proposals, and complete other grants-related work as needed. The GW is evaluated based on how they carry out these responsibilities; overall client and employee satisfaction as measured by formal and informal client and team feedback; and the progress they have made towards the performance goals outlined in their annual goal-setting worksheets.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Write and prepare 10-15 foundation grant products per month and/or the equivalent in public grants in accordance with the guidelines and requirements of each funding source. Depending upon the month and project load, this involves approximately 80-120 hours of writing and editing per month.
  • Craft persuasive narratives that effectively communicate the nonprofit's goals, objectives, and impact to potential funders.
  • Collaborate with Lead Consultants, Development Coordinators, and other team members to gather information and data necessary for grant applications.
  • Analyze the financial aspects of grant opportunities, assess their feasibility, and ensure alignment with the client's financial goals.
  • Conduct research to identify potential grant opportunities that align with the client's mission and projects.
  • Stay up-to-date with available grants from government agencies, foundations, and other funding sources
  • Other duties as determined by supervisor.

Key Competencies and Essential Job Functions

Grant Writing Expertise: You have a deep understanding of the grant writing process, including research, proposal development, and deadlines management. You are skilled at crafting clear and compelling narratives, aligning proposals with funding source priorities, and meeting submission requirements. Your expertise extends to various types of grants, such as State, Local and Federal grants, and foundation and corporate grants.

Fundraising Knowledge: You understand the broader context of fundraising within the nonprofit sector. You are familiar with different fundraising strategies and approaches, as your work often involves various fundraising efforts, such as major gift solicitation, donor relations, and event planning.

Research and Data Analysis: You are a proficient researcher who can identify grant opportunities, assess eligibility, and gather relevant data and evidence to support grant proposals. You are skilled in the data analysis necessary to assess an organization's performance and impact for reporting and proposal development.

Project Management and Collaboration: You can coordinate with various stakeholders, such as our client’s program managers, finance teams, and the like. You are competent in the project management skills that are required for ensuring that grant applications are well-organized and submitted on time. You possess strong collaboration skills that allow you to work with diverse teams to gather information and insights.

Compliance and Reporting: You are well-versed in the compliance requirements of different grantors and are capable of developing reporting systems that capture and communicate the impact and outcomes of funded projects. You have a strong attention to detail that allows you to ensure that grant reports are accurate, thorough, and submitted according to deadlines.

Grant Program Budgets: You will help manage grant program finances, including budget development, monitoring, and compliance. Collaborating with lead consultants, you'll contribute to proposal development, provide accurate financial reports, and ensure the organization meets its mission within budget constraints. Strong financial management, compliance expertise, and effective communication are key to success in this role.

Grant Prospect Research: You must excel in Grant Prospect Research, demonstrating the ability to identify and evaluate potential funding sources aligned with our client’s missions. This involves staying informed about grant-making organizations, understanding their priorities, and using this information to create a targeted grant-seeking strategy. Strong analytical skills and proficiency in research tools are crucial for success in this role.

Software Literacy & Technology: You are comfortable using all of AMC’s and AMC clients’ software platforms (Asana, Google Workplace, Foundation Directory Online, Salesforce, Sharepoint, Instrumentl, Grantstation, Dropbox, etc.) and navigate other online platforms effectively. You are able to maneuver with ease across and between systems. Additionally, you should be comfortable with and able to adopt new technologies, including but not limited to AI and LLMs.

Time and Self-Management: You are adept at time and self-management. You possess the ability to prioritize tasks effectively, juggling multiple deadlines and projects simultaneously. You employ efficient time management practices and work to ensure that grant proposals are developed meticulously and submitted punctually. You have the ability to self-manage which allows you to be productive and focused amidst competing responsibilities. Additionally, you have the capacity to set achievable goals, maintain momentum, and adapt to shifting priorities all of which are crucial to success. You have a proactive approach to time and self-management which enhances your performance and contributes to the overall efficiency and success of grant-seeking endeavors.

Other Information

Work Environment: This position leads teams and works with clients across multiple U.S. time zones. Professionalism and discretion are required. This role routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. The essential functions of the job require that the individual working in this position remain standing or sitting in a stationary position for most of the day and move about within an office environment to access file cabinets and the aforementioned office equipment.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary of $65,000-75,000. This amount is based on a variety of factors including but not limited to comparable jobs salaries, experience, and geographic location.

  • Paid, Unlimited Vacation Time (UVT): after the completion of a 90-day introductory onboarding period.
  • Paid Holidays in keeping with the City/County of San Francisco’s Holidays
  • December Holiday break: Week off over the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
  • Paid Sick Time: 1 hour earned per 30 hours worked starting on the first day of employment. You can begin utilizing earned sick time 60 calendar days after you begin working.
  • Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangement (ICHRA): On the first of the month 30 calendar days after their first day of employment, staff are eligible to participate in ICHRA and receive a$500 AMC employer contribution. Staff will also have the ability to set aside additional tax-free salary funds to pay for medical health insurance premiums.
  • Elective Dependent Care FSA: On the first of the month 30 calendar days after their first day of employment, staff are eligible to elect to participate in this benefit and to set aside pre-tax funds to pay for child or elderly care costs.
  • Transportation FSA: On the first of the month 30 calendar days after their first day of employment, staff are eligible to receive employer-provided funds (and have the option to contribute additional personal funds) to commute to work using public transportation. (Benefit is only offered for San Francisco office-based staff)
  • 401K Retirement: All full and part-time employees are automatically enrolled in AMC’s 401(k) plan after six months of employment. AMC will contribute 100% of your elective deferral contributions up to 1% of compensation plus 50% of your elective deferral contributions over 1% up to 6% of compensation.
  • New Business Bonus: You will be eligible to earn a bonus of 10% of the initial contract amount on any new client that you introduce to AMC, paid quarterly during the initial year or project period. New business bonus payments are capped at $5,000 per client. New clients are defined as those who are not already in our business development pipeline, have not discussed our services with us or have not yet received a proposal. These are organizations that you encounter outside of your normal working hours or responsibilities at AMC.
  • Performance Bonus: Staff members who are satisfactorily meeting or exceeding your performance and profitability metrics will receive a $2,000 bonus; 50% paid out in August based on January - June performance; 50% paid out in January based on July - December performance.
