A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A GPS/CONSTRUCTION LAYOUT FIELD ENGINEER

As a GPS/Construction Layout Field Engineer, you play a critical role in supporting our Civil Construction operations by providing a flow of construction layout data and machine control/survey models to maintain high field production levels. From delivering field layouts and GPS survey control points for road, bridge, & site work construction projects to operating and managing automated GPS equipment, you successfully maintain professional surveying standards in every function you perform. You independently plan and coordinate to complete the work on schedule, accurately, and use your problem solving skills to resolves issues that arise in the field. Anticipating project needs, you partner with team members throughout the company - Project Managers, Superintendents, Foremen, and other members of the GPS/survey team - to support construction goals.

With attention to detail, you review construction plans, perform layout calculations, provide structure layouts, collect as-built data, deliver final sketches, and complete field verification using plan data. You execute field work including setting up and maintaining GPS machine control, establishing both horizontal and vertical control network, and providing plan project baselines, offset baselines, control lines and field ties. Applying strong technical and time management skills, you apply your knowledge of survey practices and principles to civil engineering infrastructure projects, including paving, concrete, water sewer, grading, drainage and other utilities. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, embrace working independently, find deep satisfaction in successfully solving problems, and enjoy being empowered to make competent decisions in the field. You are hard-working, hands-on, and able to perform physical tasks including driving stakes and bull pins using a heavy mallet. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A GPS/CONSTRUCTION LAYOUT FIELD ENGINEER

  • High School Diploma and 1 years of civil construction field operations or relevant GPS survey experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience; 3-5 years of experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of GPS construction/survey equipment is required.
  • Previous technical training is strongly desired.
  • Knowledge and understanding of construction layouts, GPS machine control, CAD construction plans, and operating GPS survey equipment.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook. Prior experience with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Carlson Technologies is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving abstract.
  • OSHA 10 certification (or ability to obtain).
  • Ability to successfully pass a CORI background check is required for certain projects.

Technical training in GPS survey/construction layout work AND several years of prior construction field experience are strongly preferred but multiple factors will be taken into consideration. Experience with AutoCAD, Civil3D or Carlson Survey software is also desirable. First aid/CPR & OSHA 30 certifications are also preferred but not necessarily required.

WORK SCHEDULE

Our standard office hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 - 5:00 pm. During the construction season, the construction division is normally on-site by 6:30 am and finished by 5:00 pm (based on projects assigned and time of year - peak periods are spring and fall).
