Where: Located on the southern edge of La Quinta, California.
Pay: $115,000-$125,000 annual Bonus Eligible
Benefits:
New management full-time team members working 30 hours or more per week, will be eligible for the Company medical, dental and life insurance plans the first of the month following the first day of full-time employment.
Full-Time team members are eligible to accrue Paid Time Off ("PTO") in accordance with the Company policy at a rate of 120 hours per year.
Full-Time team members are eligible for 7 paid holidays annually.
All team members 21 years and older are eligible to participate in the J.F. Shea Co., Inc. 401(k) plan after completion of 30 days of service.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
As the leader of the Golf Course Maintenance Team, the Golf Course Superintendent directs, coaches, and coordinates the activities of workers engaged in the repair and maintenance of the Golf Course grounds, landscaping, and related structures and buildings-meeting or exceeding established standards for employee satisfaction, guest satisfaction, sales, and financial performance. This position reports to the Club Manager.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Communicate the core values and mission of BlueStar Resort & Golf (BSRG) to support the achievement of company goals.
  • Collaborate with the Club Manager to establish business goals, plan capital projects, and develop an effective three-year budget to facilitate the continual delivery of exceptional products to the marketplace and profit contributions to the company.
  • Create an enjoyable and productive work environment by leading by example and taking a proactive position to all issues concerning course operation, safety, and human resource issues.
  • Plan, develop, and implement new methods and procedures designed to improve Golf Course conditioning.
  • Review quality control data and budget statistics to plan and modify maintenance activities.
  • Produce an annual working maintenance budget that includes the golf grounds and landscaping, all structures, and the buildings and systems supporting the grounds maintenance; monitor expenditures on a weekly basis to ensure budget compliance.
  • Identify plants within the Golf Course landscape area, determine plant stress or plant health, and become aware of the landscaping needs of the grounds throughout the year to schedule daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal tasks
  • Manage landscaping team and maintain effective communication between all team members regarding landscaping operations, safety, and employee concerns.

  • Model motivation to inspire all team members and act as a coach to encourage personal and professional success; recognize and celebrate team member success; provide corrective actions when necessary.
  • Interview and hire key staff positions and oversee their performance, according to BSRG established guidelines; identify team members that will participate in the annual 360 review process.
  • Direct new team member training to improve work performance and acquaint workers with company policies and procedures.
  • Support employee development and succession plans by developing creative programs for the retention and recognition of employees and by encouraging a commitment to personal learning and development.
  • Understand association rules, regulations, and safety practices to assure compliance; encourage employees to work in a safe manner, use all personal protective equipment (safety gear) assigned, and report unsafe conditions or accidents to a supervisor.
  • Develop and implement procedures designed to minimize maintenance costs.
  • Lead annual agronomic and equipment evaluation and re-evaluation of the preventative maintenance program. Discuss maintenance and performance recommendations to improve operations with the Club Manager and Director of Agronomy; initiate requisitions for necessary purchases.
  • Confer with management to resolve maintenance problems and recommend measures to improve operations and conditions of equipment, systems and Golf Course.
  • Develop preventative maintenance programs in conjunction with the Club Manager or Director of Agronomy.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Turf Science, Landscape, Horticulture, Agronomy or similar field, preferred or the equivalent combination of education and professional experience.
  • Three to five years' leadership experience in a related field, with two years' proven experience as a superintendent preferred, and three years' supervisory experience required.
  • Class A or B Superintendent in good standing; member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and the local professional superintendent's association.
  • Prior Golf Course grow-in experience and construction knowledge.
  • Experience with TifEagle, Tifdwarf, and MiniVerde Bermuda grass.
  • Familiarity with working in a warm climate Golf Course maintenance operation.
  • Familiar with all irrigation systems for landscaping and the use of fertilizer and chemical applications for plants, trees, weeds, etc.
  • Must have a thorough knowledge of native and desert adapted plants, trimming, pruning techniques, plant health, and water needs.
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish is a plus.
  • Certified Applicator License, applicable to state.
  • Computer literate with proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Experience with irrigation control software preferred.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical operations of engines and hydraulics for guidance of equipment managers.
  • Ability to calibrate sprayers, spreaders, and scientific instruments, etc.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret as-builts, reports, plans, labels, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and regulatory documents.
  • Solid understanding in preventative maintenance systems.
  • Knowledgeable about financial forecasting and budgets with ability to create and maintain effective financial accountability to the company and ownership.
  • Ability to compute rates, rations, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, volumes of cones, cylinders, etc.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, and financial reports, legal documents.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Must have strategic planning, change management, problem-solving, decision-making, delegation, time management, supervisory and employee development skills.
  • Must have strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, with excellent customer services skills and an ability to respond to the needs and requests of coworkers and clients.
  • Must be able to consistently achieve high work standards; attention to detail, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Must demonstrate initiative, with an ability to think, work, solve practical problems, and make independent decisions based on sound judgment.
  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where continuous improvement is expected.
  • This position requires a flexible schedule to include evenings and weekends, as well as travel.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates in both a professional indoor office and outdoor environment.
  • There is routine use of standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, copy and fax machines. The noise level in the indoor environment is usually moderate.
  • There may be frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather conditions.
  • Outdoor environments may require variable terrain while carrying equipment and navigating typical Golf Course obstacles, including, but not limited to, water, plants, and the natural landscape. The employee may be exposed to hazards including, but not limited to, cuts, slipping, tripping, and falls.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to California desert wildlife such as snakes, scorpions, spiders, bobcats, javelinas, etc.
  • There may be occasional exposure to precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration.
  • The noise level in the outdoor work environment is usually moderate, but can vary depending on the equipment or machines used.
  • Employees are required to wear all assigned personal protective equipment.

  • This position may be very active and may require standing and walking for the duration of a shift, sitting and driving, lifting, pushing, digging, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, using hands to fingers, touching and holding, and reaching with hands and arms; regularly required to speak and hear.
  • The employee must be able to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
