The Director, Global Vivarium Operations & Management Lead will establish and execute a global Vivarium Operations & management strategy for Janssen's internal vivaria.

This role will provide oversight for Vivarium Operations and harmonization efforts across Janssen sites, including La Jolla CA, Spring House CA, the new South San Francisco (Brisbane) CA site and Beerse Belgium. In partnership with the North American Lead, Animal Welfare and local site management team, this role will ensure harmonization across the sites to ensure portability of science, to minimization of variables in in vivo studies, and to drive cost savings and efficiencies.

The Director, Global Vivarium Operations & Management Lead will be responsible for fostering a collaborative culture and will work with a large number of internal and external stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes. Director, Global Vivarium Operations & Management Lead will serve as a visible and effective change agent for global initiatives and will seek to provide strategic decision making for all areas of responsibility while nurturing the ideas of others.

This role will indirectly (through matrix relationships) lead a team of DVM, PhD and technical level staff providing leadership, mentorship, and career development opportunities for global teams. This role will be responsible for future capital planning, innovation strategy, budget, resource and timeline commitments for operational activities, including facility design, renovations, and upgrades. This role will also establish and oversee a centralized In Vivo Sciences program of occupational health and safety for all individuals having significant contact with research animals.

Responsibilities:

+ Provide global leadership for Vivarium Operations and management, including partnering with site management team to identify key competencies and capabilities, establishing and planning for global vivaria needs and workflows, assures prioritization of work targeted toward impactful portfolio contributions, and building awareness of 3Rs

+ Develops strategies for assuring proactivity in internal vivarium capacity and utilization globally ensuring operational excellence by defining metrics and key performance indicators

+ Interfaces with leaders and peers in other R&D teams as a thought leader on in vivo activities related to the portfolio strategy

+ Member of the In Vivo Sciences Global leadership team and contributes to strategic and long-range planning for In Vivo Sciences business and staff needs

+ Management of global operational and capital budgets related to Vivarium Operations

+ Participate in cross-functional strategic teams, external outreach, Janssen leadership representative at external in vivo or regulatory forums

Qualifications

+ Master's degree in management, project management, animal sciences, or related discipline (eg. Engineering, DVM, VMD, Ph.D.) with extensive experience in Vivarium Operations and facility management.

+ Minimum 15 (fifteen) years of pharmaceutical/biotechnology in vivo sciences or related experience in drug development is required

+ Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) or equivalent/related certification highly preferred.

+ Extensive working knowledge of key vivarium equipment and operational processes.

+ Working knowledge of US and international animal welfare guidelines and AAALAC standards.

+ Experience with international teams; Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent credential; experience working with a wide variety of animal species used in research is preferred

+ Proven track-record in working with large complex, international teams, including direct people management experience.

+ This role requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a high level of organizational ability and attention to detail and troubleshooting skills.

Travel: 20% Domestic and International

The anticipated base pay range for this position is 152,000 to 263,350. The anticipated base pay range for this position in San Francisco is 175,500 to 302,910.
