The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking to hire a full-time employee. CMAP may fill this position as a Associate GIS/Research Specialist, GIS/ Research Specialist or a Senior GIS/ Research Specialist level depending on candidate qualifications. We are interested in applicants excited about the administration of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) at the agency, including functional oversight of the day-to-day operations that supports a specialized GIS user environment. GIS users may include analysts, GIS programmers, cartographers, data and database managers, support specialists, and GIS interns. This position will be responsible for the development and maintenance of an Agency-wide geospatial strategy.

CMAP is the Chicago region’s official comprehensive planning agency integrating planning for land use and transportation in the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois.

Position Description

Successful candidates would be part of a large department that collects, visualizes, and disseminates primary and secondary data related to transportation, land use, and demographics. Staff perform research that explores and carries out targeted investigations on topics important to the agency. These projects provide the technical tools and data for the region’s land use planning, transportation planning, and plan implementation efforts.

Successful candidates would support the development and execution of an agency geo-spatial strategy. This includes leading the technical enterprise GIS environment, including administration of all desktop, on-premises, and cloud-based portals, applications, and services. They would maintain and promote new GIS applications, capabilities, and workflows. They would manage discrete projects to support this execution, including overseeing consultants. Staff may also be asked to contribute to or lead other CMAP activities, including but not limited to the implementation of ON TO 2050, as well as the agency’s general activities in policy, programming, and planning. Work is typically performed under the supervision of a Principal.

Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Salary range for the Associate GIS/Research Specialist is from $57,746 - $70,739, GIS/ Research Specialist position is from $66,409 - $81,351 and for the Senior GIS/ Research Analyst position is from $73,375 - $93,553. Education and/or Experience Qualifications

Associate GIS/Research Specialist has the following minimum requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline through internships and/or limited of professional experience with spatial analysis, data collection, research, and quantitative analysis.

GIS/Research Specialist has the following minimun requirements: A Bachelor's degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline with 2 years of professional experience with spatial analysis, data collection, research, and quantitive analyst, master's degree is preferred.

Senior GIS/Research Analyst has the following minimum requirements: A Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline with more than 5 years of professional experience with spatial analysis, data collection, research, and quantitative analysis. A Master’s degree in Geography, Urban Planning, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline with more than 3 years of professional experience with spatial analysis, data collection, research, and quantitative analysis. GISP certification preferred.

Salary Ranges:

Associate: $57,746 - $70,739

Specialist: $66,409 - $81,351

Senior: $73,375 - $93,553
