Job description

King County Information Technology Department has an exciting need for an IT Engineer, Senior. The IT Engineer, Senior will perform a full range of higher-level GIS development and application tasks: ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and GIS cloud software support, King County Comprehensive Plan support, and Metro Transit mapping and support, including web applications, spatial analysis, and map design/production. Perform all aspects of data development and maintenance for GIS datasets related to urban and regional planning, land use/land cover, zoning, and real property. Develop and nurture effective working relationships with all project clients. Assign and check work, train new employees, recommend discipline to supervisor and contribute to the performance appraisal process. Lead project teams and act as a mentor for other staff where appropriate, in alignment with project management and technical requirements.

Teleworking Requirement
The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of teleworking complemented with onsite work and meetings as needed. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection (access may be supplemented in some situations) where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
King County has a robust collection of tools and resources to support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will be joining an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work in this department's hybrid environment.
Work Schedule
The normal workweek for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternative work schedules may be considered. This position is not eligible for overtime pay.

  • ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and GIS cloud software implementation, operation and user support.
  • Metro Transit data development, maintenance, enhancement, analysis, mapping and support.
  • King County Comprehensive Plan data development, maintenance, enhancement, analysis, mapping and support.
  • Process work requests, from general questions, to intake, scoping and estimating, to implementation and documentation. Use of standard work management tools such as Azure DevOps.
  • Provide quality assurance, quality control, and user acceptance testing using established methodology and best practices.
  • Represent GIS Center on various countywide and regional product teams and/or committees.
  • Technical representative to team, peers, and customers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • General Skills - Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills; Excellent oral and written communication skills; Skill in analyzing customer business needs; Project management, planning and organization, and customer service skills; Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds; Skill in handling multiple competing priorities; Ability to work well independently, learning quickly and moving ahead with work assignments efficiently and productively, guiding and assisting others as needed.
  • Subject Matter Skills - Advanced skill in application of current GIS technologies; Advanced knowledge of GIS production of complex cartographic and other spatial data displays, analyses, and applications.
  • Software Skills - Advanced knowledge and skills with ArcGIS 11.1; Spatial Analyst; 3D Analyst; Network Analyst; Geostatistical Analyst; Python; Model Builder, and ArcSDE; Knowledge and skills with current-state ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Solutions.
  • Education/Experience - bachelor's degree in Geography, or in a science or technology field with significant application in GIS, or an equivalent combination of GIS experience and knowledge; Three years of increasingly responsible experience in the application and use of GIS technology.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) certification
