POSITION SUMMARY:
The GIS Analyst 1 is responsible for GIS related activities such as creating and modifying geospatial data, modifying and manipulating data from a wide variety of data sources, perform heads-up digitizing, and generate presentation quality maps using appropriate cartographic tools. Performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Researches and interprets Engineering drawings and various documents to create or update existing GIS data including location and attribute information.
- Trains and assists the work of interns, technicians, and other city staff.
- Downloads, converts, and manipulates GIS data from both internal and external sources to make them usable.
- Performs quality assurance and control, including reviewing data for completeness and accuracy.
- Identifying and correcting errors or omissions in the data.
- Catalog and inventory GIS data, including metadata creation.
- Input and update GIS databases, performs GIS spatial analysis.
- Generate maps.
- Keeps files and records up-to-date.
- Assists with maintaining and configuring computerized work-management system.
- Operates GIS systems.
- Documents user requirements and interacts with users to support appropriate GIS projects.
- Works closely with management staff to define GIS request.
- Performs digitizing and data compilation duties for utility GIS data maintenance activities.
- Maintains database synchronization between the utility GIS and asset management system.
- Formats, maintains, and distributes utility GIS data as necessary to support both internal and external GIS projects.
- Helps maintain online mapping portal including services, web applications, and maps.
- Creates a variety of reports and makes recommendations to supervisor.
- Performs GIS spatial analysis.
- Performs other duties as assigned and/or required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- GIS software concepts and terminology.
- GIS and relational databases.
- Integrated GPS and GIS principles.
- Web mapping.
- Asset Management.
Skill in:
- Operation of GIS software packages such as ESSRI ArcGIS.
- Investigative research and making recommendations to supervisor.
- Written and oral communication.
- Conducting studies and analyzing data.
- Reading and interpreting plans and blueprints.
- Cartography and map design.
- Maintaining files.
Ability to:
- Prepare reports, gather and classify information about geospatial data.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Train and provide work direction to subordinate personnel.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Urban Planning or related field (with an emphasis in GIS preferred).
- Two (2) years of experience in GIS.
- Valid Driver’s License.
OR
- Bachelor’s degree from any field may be considered if accompanied with a GIS Certificate.
- Two (2) years of experience in GIS.
- Valid Driver’s License.
OR
- High School Diploma or GED Tests Equivalency.
- GIS Certificate.
- Four (4) years of experience in GIS.
- Valid Driver’s License.
