Job Description:
The Collection of Genetic Resources is one of the largest and most active collections of its kind. The candidate must have a strong background and interest in curating Genetic Resources and natural history collections with good experience in data management. The candidate should be capable of managing a diverse collection comprising distinct vertebrate groups and supervising a team of curatorial assistants and student workers. This individual will also be responsible for promoting the mission of the LSUMNS and assisting the Curators with all aspects of the daily operation of the Collection of Genetic Resources. The Collection Manager ensures the long-term stability, maintenance, and growth of the Collection of Genetic Resources while facilitating its use for research and education. The Collection Manager is responsible for all aspects of collection organization, specimen preparation, specimen data maintenance, alarm system maintenance, collection digitization, documentation of collection use, loan processing, collecting permits and maintenance of accession records. Travel and work outside business hours are required. Authoritative knowledge on the taxonomy of at least one major vertebrate group (Birds, Mammals, non-Avian Reptiles, Amphibians or Fishes) is also required.
Job Description:
75% Collection management, organization, and use: Assist curators in integrating new specimens into the LSU Collection of Genetic Resources, as well as managing and curating the collection's database. Has direct responsibility for the overall operation of the collection, including the care and conservation of tissues in the collection (e.g., storage, security, and other related tasks). Handles the collection of genetic resource's correspondence, loans, and loan tracking. Is responsible for monitoring collecting, import, transport, and other specimen permits, and maintaining the biosafety level 2 status of the molecular biology lab, including scheduling and assisting with lab inspections. Assist curators in preparing proposals for collection-improvement grants, and when requested by the curators, provide tours of the collection for special visitors.
15% Managing student workers and volunteers: Supervises and trains graduate and undergraduate students working in the collection.
10% Assist curators and students in field expeditions, both in the organization and execution.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Museum Studies, or related field with 2 years related experience working in natural history collections
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in Biology, Museum Studies, or related field with 4 years of experience working in natural history collections.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Required to be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, sitting, and/or bending.
