General Manager, Operations:

So, what will you be doing?
The General Manager is responsible for the overall business of up to five pellet production sites in the Drax, US. This encompasses key performance in health, safety, and environment, quality, production, and P&L management, across all sites with an intense focus on strategic vision and deployment. The GM brings a passion for workplace safety, operational efficiency, and performance by focusing on employee engagement, continuous improvement, quality, and system approaches. Relies on broad technical knowledge to lead, coach, and develop the Operations teams to deliver improved performance by identifying root causes of failures, operational bottlenecks and ultimately improving results across all sites. Owns the performance of the plants they are accountable for.

  • Regularly evaluates their own personal performance, focusing on growing their own skills & abilities
  • Is an active participant in Drax's Senior Operations Team meetings, passionate about candid communication, alignment and support to grow engagement and drive positive change
  • Regularly spends time at Drax's plants engaging with the workforce; connects with all team members to reinforce positive behaviors and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Communicates regularly about performance (feedback); regularly asks for improve performance (coaching) and grows organization capabilities (delegation)
  • Takes a leadership role in plant management meetings to drive planning and execute manufacturing and maintenance initiatives
  • Excels at communication both verbal and written. Establishes and communicates clear expectations (targets); uses effective tools to measure and monitor performance and uses a clear accountable system to track & report actions
  • Sets and owns performance standards, communicates to their team and holds accountable through regular communication forums. Completes regular performance reviews and feedback opportunities
  • Coaches on the fly, builds and maintains strong working relationships and proactively mitigates employee relations situations through these relationships
  • Build and maintains strong relationships with key stakeholders (Plant Management, procurement, capital, and executive leadership)
  • Manages and provides clear leadership around P&L execution and cost drivers affecting the overall business
  • Stays current with production management best practices, increases knowledge through educational opportunities; reads technical publications

Operational Execution:
  • Provides a clear sense of direction and focus to the team, supporting high performing, committed employees
  • Supports the continued growth of the company through manufacturing operations process improvements and providing hands-on direction to multi-site manufacturing teams
  • Addresses critical issues that must be managed in order to realize the future vision and sets short, medium and long-term strategies and objectives at the plant level to achieve them
  • Develops and drives plant improvement initiatives by identifying areas of weakness, then drives solution implementation through systematic approaches with the site leadership teams
  • Develops and maintains performance metrics to monitor progress and keep the VP Southern Operations informed of status, challenges, opportunities for improvement and accomplishments
  • Helps to leads the development of the operating budgets for plants, executes on opportunities to minimize costs and expenditures as well as initiates continuous improvement programs to improve safety, increase throughput, reliability and capacity
  • Operate a planning system that will align processes in the plants and ensures on-time delivery, improved productivity and eliminating unplanned down time
  • Provides direction and guidance to Plant Management on the execution of Capital projects; safely, on time, on budget
  • Accurately evaluates the impact of new equipment / processes on production and cost structure and demonstrates the ability to use capital efficiently
  • Work with plant management to improve maintenance scheduling to decrease unplanned production down time and improve the efficiency and profitability of each plants, using a systematic methodology to improve facility reliability. Includes effective planning and scheduling of maintenance and a total productive maintenance mindset
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders; Internally - Procurement, Capital, Operations Management, Finance. Externally - Government Agencies, NGO's, and local neighborhoods/communities

Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
  • Proven commitment to establishing and becoming world class in HSE
  • 1o years' experience in progressive Plant Management roles, leading high-performance teams in continuous production environments; Experience within the Wood Products, industrial manufacturing or other relevant arenas will be considered
  • A post-secondary undergraduate degree in a relevant field (Engineering, Business, Operations Management) is preferred. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered
  • Experience with mechanical engineering / process engineering is an asset
  • Strong knowledge of business and management principles; budgeting, planning, resource allocation, human resources
  • Previous experience implementing and using continuous improvement tools such as problem solving, Six Sigma, and Lean Manufacturing is preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient with personal computers and business applications, including the ability to learn new systems and use Microsoft Office Products to analyze data and trends

Special Features:
  • Will be required to travel both within North America (>50%)
  • Will require regular attendance at leadership team meetings to help prepare and present data
  • A flexible approach to working extended hours, as needed

  • The individual will provide North American leadership, compliance and training for the organization as well as being expected to contribute at both a strategic and facility level to identify priorities and recommend solutions to support the business
