Job Summary
Assists in General Maintenance and repairs of facility and property structures. Performs overall repair, general and preventative maintenance for the campus at large including Hales, Temple View Apartments (TVA) and Off-Campus University Housing. Ensures work order requests are completed in an efficient manner.
Primary Responsibilities
- Perform repairs which include painting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry on all campus facilities including, single student housing (Hales), married student housing (TVA) and faculty and staff housing (University Housing) as directed by the Supervisor/Manager and by work order.
- Responsible for timely response to all incoming work orders according to priority standard set on response time.
- Update status of work orders in work order system including notes.
- Assists the Maintenance Supervisor or Manager on special maintenance projects, i.e., preventive maintenance of building components and/or mechanicals.
- Assists in emergency work orders including those after hours, holidays, and weekends.
- Encourages positive tenant/staff relationships while working in direct contact with students and faculty, staff at all campus properties.
- Follow the established Standards, Trainings, Safety and Policies.
- Must be able to take direction, be organized and have the ability to effectively communicate with supervisor, manager and customer.
- Responsible for notifying management of findings that need solutions and remedies.
- Help train/grow student workers to comply/learn standards, codes and increase their knowledge of maintenance in campus facilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience
- One-year certificate from college or technical school; or one-two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have an open mindset to changes and positive attitude to reflect work as a cohesive team.
Skill Set
- Computer experience is needed to receive, review and send emails, review and update work orders, and perform basic computer functions.
- Must be able to multi-task and work well under stressful conditions daily.
- Must be able to communicate well in English and have the ability to explain things correctly and succinctly.
License or Certification: Current Hawaii driver's license required.
WORK SCHEDULE:
- Flexible hours within the 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm schedule Monday through Friday.
- Must be able to assist the on-call worker after hours, weekends, and some holidays. Subject to change.
TRAINING AND EVALUATIONS:
- The employee is required to attend all training that is mandated/approved by the supervisor. In addition, the employee is expected to meet with the supervisor weekly and for the annual performance evaluation.
Approximate starting hourly rate: $17.50 - $19.00. The wage offered could be above or below range based on education and experience as it relates to the job description.
PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES:
Miscommunication issues with customers and co-workers. Challenges in meeting maintenance deadlines.

Federal, state, institutional or other types of regulations that influence job responsibilities. All activities must conform to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Employee has a small office area in the maintenance shop which is shared with other Maintenance Technicians. Support areas also contains equipment, tools and supplies used in maintaining Hales, Temple View Apartments, Faculty homes and BYU-Hawaii Campus.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Various maintenance tools (for example: screwdrivers, hammers, Power Tools, etc.) plus wet vacs, carpet shampooers, floor waxers and floor strippers, vacuums, computer, cell phone, copy machine, printer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employee must be able to stand, climb, walk, push, pull, kneel, stoop, crawl, crouch, reach, hear and see and lift up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
