MISSION:
It is the mission of the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) to impact and transform young lives, strengthen families, and support safer communities through targeted prevention and rehabilitation.
JOB PURPOSE:
Under general to light supervision maintains the existing physical facilities of the Agency, in the most cost-effective manner possible. Notifies Supervisor of unsafe conditions or repairs needed outside of current skill level. Participates in special projects and light construction within the Department. Performs semi-skilled level trade duties and assist other trades workers in performing maintenance duties.
JOB DUTIES:
Provides for the General Maintenance and repair of the Agency's facilities in the most cost-effective manner possible.

Performs multiple professional trades functions as needed, this includes the following:
General carpentry work.
Repairs and minor construction.
Applying paint and drywall repairs.
Light Plumbing repairs and fixture installation.
Roof and building repairs.
Forming, pouring, and finishing concrete.
Installing and/or repairing locks or access control systems.
Provides preventative maintenance.
Performs heavy manual labor, and Light electrical repairs, fixture installation, outlet and switch replacement, light bulb replacement, and low voltage work.
Serves as Lead Campus Maintenance Technician and Master Craftsman Technician for the BRRC Campus Maintenance team and co-lead PMI (Preventive Maintenance Inspections) across the agency.
Assists with maintenance efforts at other DJJ facilities across the state.
Participates in or works independently on special projects within the department.
Independently or with others performs light construction work as needed.
Supervises SCDC Inmates as needed.
Prepares and submits material requests.
Prepares and submits work orders.
Remains abreast of new techniques, procedures, and equipment in the maintenance field.
Responds to 24-hour emergency call back requests as scheduled. Works outside of traditional hours as needed.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned by supervisors.
Minimum and Additional Requirements
STATE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Trades experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Relevant experience may be substituted for the required diploma on a year-for-year basis for basis.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Demonstrate proficient ability to use all tools, equipment, and materials associated with general building maintenance, light construction, and repairs.
Must have knowledge of general construction practices and procedures.
Must have general knowledge of Plumbing, HVAC, & Electrical Trades.
Ability to independently interpret plans and specifications as applied to special projects assigned.
Employee must have and maintain valid driver's license.
Employee will work independently, with others, and/or oversee others as assigned.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Must be willing to work with SCDC Inmates and be willing to work at night or in inclement weather as needed.
Receives general supervision from the Facilites Maintenance Manager II and Maintenance Manager I.
Employee must possess sufficient knowledge to make on the spot, independent judgements regarding general building maintenance, light construction, and repairs.
Employee will consult with Supervisor for direction as needed.
Must be able to lift up to 50lbs unassisted.
This position performs duties relating to the custody, control, transportation or recapture of youth within the jurisdiction of SCDJJ; employee may have direct or indirect contact with incarcerated Youth. Training applicable to these duties will be provided. Position subject to recall during Agency or State emergency.
Preferred Qualifications
PREFERRED AGENCY REQUIRMENTS:
A high school diploma and three years trades experience directly related to the area of employment. Formal education in area of employment can be substituted on a year for year basis. General understanding of light construction procedures and industry practices. Systematic approach to special projects as assigned. Employee must have and maintain a valid South Carolina Driver's License.
