About the Employer
Located in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley, the El Monte Union High School District was established in 1901. Its High Schools include Arroyo, El Monte, Mountain View, Rosemead, South El Monte and Fernando R. Ledesma High School. EMUHSD also features the El Monte-Rosemead Adult School, one of California's largest and most respected adult programs.
The District employs 615 certificated employees and 568 classified employees. The professional staff provides educational programs for over 7,000 students in grades 9 through 12 and 11,000 in adult education.
Just minutes from the hub of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Civic Center, with the Pomona, San Bernardino and 605 freeways traversing the areas, the district boasts many comfortable and residential neighborhoods in addition to providing sites for a myriad of business and industrial facilities.
The population studies show that approximately 200,000 people reside in our attendance boundaries. The area that the District serves represents a cross-section on interests, professions, and groups. The majority of income for people in this area is broadly grouped into industrial and factory work and retail sales. The families who live in this area include many in the middle to lower income economic groups.The District philosophy of education calls for the school, the home and the community to work cooperatively toward the achievement of its educational goals.

Job Description / Essential Elements:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities, Maintenance, Operations and Transportation, operate ground-related equipment to perform skilled grounds maintenance work; train and provide work direction to grounds maintenance personnel as assigned.
Classification Characteristics:
This is a bargaining unit position.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
Representative Duties: (Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below.   • Operates grounds-related equipment to perform skilled grounds maintenance work; E
  • Trains and provides work direction to assigned personnel; trains personnel in the safe operation of power and heavy equipment; assures safety procedures of operations are maintained; E
  • Cuts, edges and trims landscaped areas; plants lawns, trees, shrubs, and other vegetation; prepares and fertilizes soil; E
  • Rebuilds and renovates baseball and football fields, tracks, and pit areas; E
  • Performs grounds maintenance duties such as mowing, trimming, sod applications, and stump and shrub removal as required; E
  • Sprays landscaped areas with pesticides and controls weeds with chemicals and substances; E
  • Drives a truck to travel to assigned District sites; hauls dirt, sand, brick, dust, rubbish, and cuttings; E
  • Operates a variety of power equipment such as trenches, tractors, pressure sprayers, blowers, gang mowers, and other grounds maintenance equipment; E
  • Irrigates various ground areas by hand or sprinkler; maintains and repairs sprinkler systems;
  • Maintains and performs minor repairs on equipment;
  • Conducts pesticide and herbicide safety meetings;
  • Prepares required reports and records, such as the California State Pesticide Report, vehicle maintenance, work orders for assigned personnel, and other related documents;
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Principles of training and providing work direction
  • Herbicides and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance
  • Methods and materials used in controlling pests, insects, and weeds
  • Principles and practices of training personnel in safe equipment operation and grounds maintenance work
  • Operation of heavy grounds equipment and related hand and power tools
  • Pesticides and other chemicals used in gardening and grounds keeping work
  • Health and safety regulations
  • Cultivating, fertilizing, water, and spray of flowers, trees and shrubs
  • Maintenance and repair of irrigation systems
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy
  • Record-keeping techniques

ABILITY TO:
  • Operate grounds-related equipment to perform skilled grounds maintenance work
  • Train and provide work directions to others
  • Learn, apply, and explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Perform specialized grounds keeping duties in the care and maintenance of District grounds
  • Mow, edge, water, weed fertilize, rake and cultivate lawn, flower beds, athletic fields, and other landscaped areas
  • Maintain and repair sprinklers and watering systems
  • Operate heavy power equipment used in grounds keeping
  • Perform skilled grounds maintenance duties including mowing, edging, and weeding
  • Assist others in specialized grounds keeping activities
  • Maintain athletic fields in a safe condition
  • Lift heavy objects
  • Safely operate power equipment
  • Perform heavy physical labor
  • Observe legal and defensive driving practices

WORKING CONDITIONS: Outside environment; subject to extreme weather conditions and dust and noise from equipment operations. Position requires the ability to perform moderate lifting of 15-44 pounds, bending, kneeling, pulling, and operating power tools, equipment, and vehicles. Incumbents may be exposed to noise from equipment operation, working around machinery with moving parts, fumes, smoke or gases, hazardous materials, and extreme heat.

Requirements / Qualifications
Proof of High School graduation or Equivalent.
