Job Summary

The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a FUSE Student Researcher in Psychological Science on the Dahlonega campus. Seeking a Student Researcher to conduct an undergraduate research study on the long-term effects of diet and exercise on measures of memory and cognition. The work will involve weighing mice each day, placing mice in an exercise apparatus, conducting daily cognitive testing, meeting with faculty member on a weekly basis, and preparing conference presentations as well as a peer-reviewed publication. The research assistant will join the FUSE program to conduct focused and meaningful research, scholarly and creative activities alongside a faculty researcher from June 3 - July 26, 2024.

Responsibilities
  • Weighing mice each day to maintain a goal weight.
  • Placing mice into exercise apparatus for 10 min/day, 5 day/wk.
  • Conducting daily cognitive testing using the radial arm maze.
  • Maintaining vivarium records and data.
  • Collecting physiological data.
  • Preparing conference presentations.
  • Collaborating on peer-reviewed publication submission.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Animal husbandry, data management skills, comfortable working with mice, able to stand for 45 minutes at a time.
  • Public speaking skills for conference presentation would be good to have.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Current UNG student not graduating before December 2024.
  • Intro Psychology course, Research Methods course, Biology 1107/1108 sequence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior work with laboratory mammals preferred but not required (training will be provided).
  • CITI Training at start of grant preferred; otherwise, students will complete CITI within first few weeks of work.
