Ballast Books is a quickly growing independent publisher. Our authors have important messages, and our job is to get them out to the world as effectively as possible. With that in mind, we're looking for an experienced freelance or part time Proofreader/Copy Editor to help polish our authors’ manuscripts and make them the best that they can be. A deep passion for books and strong editing skills are required for this role.
A prospective freelance editor should be able to provide whatever level of editing is needed based on the condition of a manuscript. For example, they should be able to address spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors while pointing out glaring mistakes for manuscripts that are in great shape already. In addition, they should be able to provide further support, such as by revising awkward or unclear sentences, addressing plot and chronology inconsistencies, and providing critical feedback, for manuscripts that require more in-depth editing. Regardless of the level of editing needed, our freelance editors must be committed to exhaustively reviewing the content and potentially even working with the author to ensure the final manuscript is as compelling as possible.
The ideal candidate for this role will be incredibly detail-oriented, thorough, and accurate while maintaining appropriate flexibility to accommodate creativity and stylistic choices on the part of the author. Of course, strong verbal/written communication skills are a must, especially when it comes to providing recommendations and explaining edits to authors. Ballast Books also highly values individuals who are willing to take initiative and go above and beyond to deliver a top-notch product.

- Strong command of the English language

- Understanding of CMOS and publishing standards
- Sharp attention to detail
- Adaptability based on authors’ goals and needs
- Ability to work independently with self-accountability

If you think you are the right candidate for this role, please include a cover letter that outlines your editing background and serves as a good example of your writing ability. Any candidates who seem like a potential fit will be asked to provide some editing samples and complete an editing test.
