Job Description and Duties
The reporting location for this position is Colorado Desert District Office in Borrego Springs, CA. This position will work under the close supervision of Senior Environmental Scientist.
The Forestry Technician reports to the District Forester II, with guidance from other technical specialists on the resource management staff in the Colorado Desert District. The Forestry Technician will serve as Lead role for Forestry teams and assists State Natural Resource management staff in implementing projects for the protection, restoration, and management of natural resources in support of the State Parks Wildfire and Forest Resilience Program.
Typical assignments include forest practice; service forestry; State land surveys; chaparral management; nursery operations; insect control; range improvement; and ranger unit/district prefire planning, inspection, and program administration. Incumbents are considered part of the Department's emergency response team and will perform fire suppression, prevention, and/or inspection duties during fire season and, infrequently, on other occasions. Individuals entering the series at any level must complete a basic Forest Fire Fighter Training Course prior to working in emergency assignments. The Forestry Technician provides assistance in forestry tasks such as, but not limited to: tree marking, layout and flagging, prescribed fire, exotic plant control, hydrologic and soil disturbance monitoring, vegetation monitoring, fuel reduction efforts, fuels grading, wildlife monitoring, and acting as a field crew lead or State’s Representative.
Typical working hours are 07:00 AM to 05:30 PM, Monday-Thursday but may also work odd hours or overnight field spike/camp nights and weekends depending on program/project needs.
Training and Development Assignments may be considered.
